Great report. Going to Cali in a few weeks myself to, well, visit my sister. I'll be messing about in some of the areas mentioned in your post. Stayed in Hendy a few years ago. One of the most surreal camping trips I've ever had...and I've been around. The owl's hoots reflecting off of the trees giving away a haunting sound...the screaming animal that no one else seemed to notice at zero dark thirty (fox?)...the fog creeping through the trees the next morning. Good stuff.

Hey everyone, plan on heading up to Alabama Hills next week to break in the new RTT and wanted to know from folks who have been there for suggestion on maybe shaded campsites? I know it's all rocks so I wanted to know if anyone knew of a spot that has some shield from the sun. Thanks!

Thanks! I picked up one of those shade awnings to help out with the sun while we're there, so that should do the trick!

Just up the road from Alabama Hills is Lone Pine Campground. Really nice spot on the creek which is probably flowing fast this time of year. Lots of trees, and probably a bit cooler than the Hills area. You do have to pay a campground fee but there are stoves, fire rings, picnic tables and bathrooms there. Just a thought as the Hills get pretty freaking hot being down in the valley. Enjoy!
