I always gave them a wide berth but talking to them on the UHF was uhm, illuminating. Since I could collect speed faster than they could when safe I’d just move over to the opposite lane and back off so they could push through. Of course I was driving a loaded up 105 LandCruiser with a camper trailer.

It sounds like you're talking about dispersed camping, which is mostly allowed, but at the same time is pretty hard in Minnesota I've found. Northern Minnesota is basically wall to wall trees, so it can be hard to find areas to drive off the road/trail. But yeah, check the MVUM for any state forest you want to explore. That and the website should tell you the dispersed camping rules.

There are a couple ORV areas up north - one of which is Spider Lake, where that picture was taken. These areas may have separate rules.

There are also a number of 'rustic campgrounds' up north, usually on more remote forest roads, which are also good for camping. They're generally free and first-come-first-serve, and don't usually have crowds.

Oregon-to-Canada on the WABDR (June 2018) - Day 1: Joe and Daisy's First Big Dirt Adventure
    June 24, 2018.

It's not often that we end up on a trip in our own backyard. There are many reasons for that - there are amazing sights far and wide, adventurous friends are located states away, and of course the weather in Washington makes snow-free exploration tough much of the year.

But when Joe got a 4Runner and mentioned that he and his wife (Daisy) wanted us to get them (and their 16-month old) out on their first trip, it seemed like a great opportunity to do something a bit easier and a bit more local.

The WABDR (Washington Backcountry Discovery Route) fit that bill perfectly!

Read the story with tons of photos:

Yeah, it was very Rainier-like. It's super-interesting how Adams and Rainier are similar, but Hood is so different with it's pointy top.

Day 3 or our WABDR trip is posted - our run from south of Ellensburg to just north of Cashmere (through Leavenworth, just a few days before Northwest Overland Rally, so extra expo). Read all about it, with lots of pictures:

On the fourth day, we hit our highest elevation and several fire lookouts (which were, dare I say, surrounded by burned forest). We also made our way down to Lake Chelan via The Jungle - a fun, steep, narrow set of switchbacks that we refused to re-route around as suggested by the cautious folks who coordinate the WABDR!

Check out the story and more than 50 pics - WABDR Day 4: Lookouts. And The Jungle!

As we neared the north end of the WABDR, it'd been a fun but relatively easy trip. I don't know if it was more experience than we had on the OBDR or if the route was just easier - but @mrs.turbodb and I were happy to finally get a bit more technical trail (even if it was a side trail) for the excitement.

And then, there was the excitement at the border...
