...Our last step before new ground was to head down the Silver Steps one more time. This is a fun section of trial that makes it's way over the slickrock and gets the trucks a little flexy-twisty. In fact, while I found this entire trail to be fun - and while there are definitely more challenging parts - I think this is the most enjoyable part. Plus, the views in front of you while you're there...

...We also found an ammo box - something we initially thought must be a geocache, but instead turned out to be a congratulatory note from the National Park Service, letting us know that we'd found a secret ruin - one of many throughout the monument.
    One of many you say?

...Having dozed off to sleep, I was awoken by an unusual sound about an hour later. It sounded like small grains of sand landing on the tent and rolling down the rain fly. Rain? No - it definitely didn't sound like rain, which lands with a single drop. A squirrel in a tree above, dropping pieces of pine cone on the tent? I didn't think I'd parked under a tree...

after camping in the san bernardino national forest last weekend, @prof.jones and i came across a guy stuck on the trail. he had recently brought a 2wd F150 to transport his dirtbike to go riding and had be lead down this trail by google maps, towards a OHV area ( the easy road was a couple miles further away, although this guy didn’t know that). the trail starts out easy but quickly gets worse and he had dropped a wheel off the side of track leaving him high centered on a rock. the new to him vehicle had no jack, and the local sheriffs dept that was out doing some training didnt have one with them in the side by side they were in. (they were the first to come across him) using the stock jack we jacked the F150 up and got some rocks under his drivers side front wheel then used my @MAXTRAX doubled up as a ramp, with a tow strap wrapped around his frame (i used my recovery bag as a buffer to perhaps not cut and destroy my strap) as some extra 'umph' - we managed to get him free easily, after an appropriate amount of set up time. felt good to have multiple tools (i have other recovery things) and options to use and to provide someone some help. there was another vehicle that came up the trail after us who just turned around 150ft short and left without even talking to us which was kinda disappointing.......

Curious what the reason is for the platforms under your tires in the top pic? I understand doing it in snow and what not, but curious why you did it here. Seriously wondering as I have seen a few other people do it and not sure why. Thanks thanks.

Ah makes sense, don't have an RTT, but now see why that would matter.
