New Taco owner here. I am now beginning my research on options for camping with my Taco. I really like this setup. So far, I am leaning towards a softopper shell with this type of tent extension. I have a shortbox so I need to be able to lower the tailgate for those few extra inches so I can stretch my legs.

I am considering the softopper over a hardshell because I won't drive with it all the time. Only when I'm going camping so storing the softopper will be much easier.

Any tips you can give me that you've learned from camping with this setup?

How fast does it deploy? Also did you re-gear? Thinking about the same wheel tire combo 255/80/17 right? Truck looks great!

I've rented two vehicles with this type of tent. One in Iceland and another for a roadtrip through Arizona, Utah and New Mexico. They are super easy to deploy. Literally 2 minutes. Release 3 latches and then crank the thing up. Do the opposite to close it.

This one in Iceland had a slanted roof. The one we had for the US trip was identical to the one in the pic.

Didn't even think that was an option. I understand about RV renting, but renting a truck with an rtt or such sounds more fun. Gonna search for that. Might be an option in the future.

In Iceland they're pretty easy to find. Lots small rental companies there with small 4x4 SUVs with RTTs. I rented a Suzuki something.

Here in the states, options are slimmer. We rented a Jucy Van. Literally a Dodge Caravan with a RTT. Check them out. Pretty slick. We spent 7 days on the road and it was pretty comfortable.

This is our ride in Iceland. Also a couple of shots from my trip.

Great idea and great shots! Which wide angle lens are you shooting with? Iceland is on my photo bucket list but hear it's tricky to avoid the crowds. Looks like your way with the camper and driving yourself around is ideal.

I used my Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 for these shots.

And yes. Camping is the way to see Iceland for sure.

thanks - figured it was a 14 - great eye. I don't have that lens but do use a Rokinon 14mm and love that focal length.

The lady and I camping out at a local lake. No tent, just blankets and the bed. I made an amazing spaghetti carbonara that evening.

Fairly easy to set up - similar to typical ground tents with a little additional work with the extension part to secure to truck. Probably helps to have a 2nd person, but I have done by myself both times.

Only downside is set up / take down time and lack of mobility once at campsite/destination. But those are really only if comparing to RTT set up. The tent works as a standalone tent also if you wanted to detach for a quick trip, etc.

If you do go this route with a different tent brand, make sure you check the specs of the top straps to secure to top of vehicle/shell. Mine secures to the roof rack, but the straps have enough length to reach front of car (it is SUV/mini van style). I doubt the soft top would have any places to secure on top.

    Very cool pics (and trip)!

Nice! Yeah it was a surprisingly great weekend for camping in Big Sur. I have a semi-tradition of camping there for new years and it was unseasonably warm on the top of the hill. Dispersed camping is almost the same as regular camping. You just need a shovel and the will to use it ;)

Congrats on the shell. We pack ours to the roof!

I like how you installed the compressor, thanks for the idea. Curious, what sliders and front bumper are those?

Suggestion, unless you are a hobbit: open and use your drawers to support a extension floor piece to turn it into a full length bed when the weather is nice out.
