Our trailer is getting fully restored in the shop and I’m too soft to tent camp in the cold. :)

That is why there is so much space available when it gets a little cold.
And the bugs are gone, too. :)

I should specify. I want a secluded spot next to a fishable river where no one will bug me that I can literally drive my truck to the river bank. Basically, exactly what was in the OPs picture. I got plenty of spots to go, but none like that, and none that are within 3 hours.

I'm in Sacramento. If you know anything let me know. I'm also known for cleaning and improving campsites. I usually pack out several pounds of other people's trash when I go out.

    ;-)

Thats great! He said any National Forest in CA and I thought who would want to camp there? I like to get away from people. I also believe my site is much improved when I leave.

Its actually a lot easier to get away from people here than you think. While National Parks are almost always a zoo, the national forests around can be extremely devoid of people. Especially if they're on the eastern side of the Sierras, because our main population is centered around the coast. Trouble is, that's like 4hrs away from my house.

About 1/2 of the land in California is federal land.

Forest vs Park. If you actually do like to get away from people you should try it some time ;)

Ahh, I'd have thought the Truckee or Yuba River (North Fork) should afford a bunch of similar camp spots within ~2 hrs of you?

I think you're right and I've checked out a lot of potential spots from Google Earth. The other trouble is, the Easter Sierra's and high desert of J Tree and Death Valley also call my name frequently. Hehehe. There's a lot to do here if you just go out and get it!

I lived in CA most of my life, but moved to New Mexico, in part, because it's the 5th largest state with only 2 million people. I find it a lot easier to get away than in CA. Just my opinion.

All about the trade-offs - if you need proximity to big metropolises and you can stomach 3 hrs on the highway NorCal is hard to beat

Sierra Foothills Overlanders does a trip a month to some pretty cool places. We just went to Death Valley, and they are talking about a possible 8 day trip doing the continental divide from New Mexico to Montana. That sounds epic

Is that the smoke from the camp fire in the paradise area?

    Beautiful view!

My sister lives in Forest Ranch, so I've been tracking the fire.

I personally love it! It’s a little big for my short bed but nothing too noticeable, I don’t like bugs being able to crawl in and I feel a little safer. One thing I recommend is a bed mat, the ridges in the bed liner aren’t easy on the back lol.
