I recently changed the drums on 2002 Tacoma and once I did, the truck started jumping around when I hit the brakes. It gets a lot worse when I try and downshift. To me it sounds like its not going all the way out of gear or something but I can hear a metallic racking sound when I push the clutch in. sorry if I don't have a better description than that its kind of hard to describe.

Hard to say but surly it has to do with the new drums...are they cheapish chinese drums? They could be worse than whatever you had on there to begin with. Its not too uncommon to get new cheap drums that are out of round.

I would also think it was caused by the new drums. You could take them back off and have them turned if you have not already done that.

I had issues with the dealership that sold my truck only replacing the drums and rotors but not the pads and shoes. The truck would shake quite aggressively when braking. The apparent cause was the drum cylinders leaking causing the shoes to grab inconsistently. I ended up replacing the calipers, pads, shoes, and drum cylinders and all is well now.

Did you get grease on the shoes and forget to clean.

Some drums may very well come with oil/ rust preventive on to prevent rust on the long boat ride

anything like that on shoes or drums will cause that issue
