Truck cranks but no start

Aloha, I’m having problems with my truck, She cranks but doesn’t start. Got a supercharger with the piggyback installed for about 2 years and ever since then, the check engine light would be on. Recently, the truck would run fine and then it would shut off out of the blues. I scanned the codes and it would show the crankshaft sensor, camshaft position sensor and the egr. Changed all of those and the truck still won’t start. Do you think the piggyback could be affecting it?

 

Just remember those Codes are for the Complete Circuits not just the sensor.

As long as you have the Cam and Crank senor help code the fuel will be shutoff.

Did you break the timing Chain ??

 

I haven’t checked the timing chain, that’s the next thing I’m gonna look at, thank you

 

Try some starting fluid, if it fires at least you know where to start

 

If you replaced all of those sensors and none of the codes went away it is suspicious. If you just had one sensor code and it didn’t go away after changing the sensor then yeah it would stand to reason perhaps it was a short somewhere else in the circuit. But for all 3 to be replaced and no change in the faults, then you’ve probably got a smoking gun affecting all three. Since the engine was still working when you had all 3 codes who’s to say if they have anything to do with what’s not letting your engine start now of course, but definitely something to consider looking at.

As far as the timing belt, well it’s pretty quick to assess and recently I swapped out a broken one on my neighbors Ranger. It’s interesting because he wasn’t getting any codes - a dealership misdiagnosed it as a broken fuel pump which is how I came into the picture when they wanted him to pay $1100 to replace his fuel pump and of course he couldn’t afford to pay that on a 21 year old truck which is where I came into the problem. The crank position sensor on that truck showed no issues as I was getting RPM readings while cranking the engine. I’m not sure if Tacoma’s are the same. The cam sensors weren’t showing any codes either (even though the camshaft wasn’t moving). The only other thing which seems possible though pretty unlikely with the timing belt is it slipped out of position. I don’t remember how much you need to remove if anything to check the crank timing mark, but you could verify timings right.

Now the other thing I’m wondering is under what condition was your engine dying randomly - under the same conditions like idling, high gear, low RPM, when hot, etc.? Finding this out or if it was random can also help figure out what might be happening.

You could try starter fluid or open up a cylinder through a spark plug hole to see if you’re getting fuel to the cylinders while cranking as @pairodice said. A visual inspection of the piggy back wiring would be next, if not my first step. Since you had codes since you paid someone to install the piggyback I’d say it’s worth inspecting. Is there a wiring harness you can remove or did they hard wire it in - I’m guessing it’s hardwired in unless you bought the harness from another company. Still if he used a removable wiring harness it’s a lot simpler to rule out the piggyback and plug the engine harness straight into the ECM.

Eventually it would be good to redo the piggyback wiring regardless if it’s not your problem for the no start so identifying what it is and how it’s wired could be helpful no matter what. Is it a URD or AEM?

 

May have found the solution, my wires were pinched running from the 5th injector to the ecu so every time i would lightly touch the wires, the truck would would shut off
