Doubt they'll do that, if it costs Toyota just a $100 to change 10,000 of them (about a month of units produced gave or take) that's like a million, they can change a 100 for $10,000 so unless there are a few fatalities or serious injuries, they'll prob choose to gamble there's only a few hundred?? IDK, but I'm hoping they'll do the right thing before their rep takes another hit. It's a minor part but it can have a serious outcome.

Nope! They seem to be following GM's lead on the defective ignition switch for which they got caught. My guess is to change the part number might be the equivalent of acknowledgement of a problem and might cost more to settle? IDK I'm not a lawyer, but that would be my guess.

That seems to answer the recall question. With no part number roll it should be F3I interchangable with no retrofit. And unless it's a serialized part there is no part traceability other than the supplier part number.

If they are using a revised CPS does anyone know what month/year they started using the new one? I take my truck through a touchless carwash once a month while I am at home that also sprays the underbody as you drive through and if the old style fails due to direct water spray then I would rather change it myself now then to have this fail on me while I could potentially be several hundred miles from home and stuck on the side of the road.

I don't recall any failures on here from water, they mostly had hot weather in common.

I guess if we strip out the tech, put 22r engines and a bench seat back in, give them fiberglass beds and better paint, they'll be reliable again.

No one will buy them but they'll be simple and run forever with no need for a CPS.

Sometimes simple is better which is part of the reason I got my Hilux. I know Americans are all about creature comforts and the EPA is making things difficult, which is why Toyota should be spending more $$$ on post-CAFE engine reliability.

It also seems like more and more people are going for those 1980's era Toyota trucks now: http://www.foxnews.com/auto/2017/04...-next-big-thing-in-classic-car-world.amp.html

Just because they were popular didn't make them great. I ought to know, I had a few when they were brand new in the 80's and early 90s. Reliable? The little engine ran forever but there were plenty of other little niggling things to deal with. It was a good truck, usually better than a Ford or Chevy at the time but a great little truck? Not really if you take off the rose colored glasses.

They were slow, underpowered and simple. If that meets your needs then you like them.

A resurgence in popularity doesn't equate to it being a better product, only the market is favoring survivors and now command a price premium.
