I was seriously considering taking my Hilux on the Trans-America trail next summer because of its immense fuel range on the 2.4L non-turbo diesel, but the wife doesnt like the harsh ride, so I'm forced to build up my Land Cruiser.

Well I own all standard cars for that reason... push start... bro not trying to poke the proverbial bear, but we fly to outer space and board a space station, have landed humans on the moon, and rovers on mars. You seriously trying to justify a car breaking down within the manufacture's factory warranty.... aka the amount of miles they're willing to risk their money to repair a faulty car. And the only reason they even go that far is so you'll blow a 35-48k money load on their face

I thought a post in another thread showed pics of the old CPS and the replacements. The part number for the old (original) was 0970 07504 and the replacement was 0971 07120. Now I'm confused (but at my age that is not an uncommon thing)!

The OP wrote the mfg. date of his truck was 11/15 and his CPS failed at 17K. Mine was produced in the same month and now has 16.5K on the clock. As I wrote earlier, I may just change it out anyway even though it isn't under the warranty. Good or bad idea? Opinions welcome.

With you making comments that will never happen! It was my understanding you were going to sell/trade your 16 TRDORDCSB 4x4 A/T (loaded with JBL) and get a Colorado or Canyon. They would welcome you on their forums

Looked into it but the resale trade value was in the shitter on these turd gens. I'm not going to take a 4 or 5k loss on trade right now. Going to live with the truck for a few more years and then hopefully there will be better options out there, whether from Toyota or another automaker like the Ford Ranger. You might as well get used to my being here. Hell after I trade I'll probably stick around just to see how the Tacoma shakes out in years to come. Yeah, I'm not going anywhere so get used to me or hit the ignore button ;)

Those numbers (in the link below) look like they are the supplier part numbers. The Toyota part number (90919-05089) doesn't seem to have changed. Hopefully they have better documentation and traceability in their own configuration control systems.

I wouldn't worry too much most of the CPS failures are a minority of trucks, if it does fail then the warranty will take care of it for you. only thing worrying about things that may happen will shorten your lifespan, if the thing is running great enjoy it, lifes too short.

I'd replace it or just keep a spare... better than getting stranded on a road trip or on the trails

    none yet

So I read through a bunch of pages on the thread that you posted and it does sound like heat soak is causing the issue but sounds like the cats also failed and most people are assuming the CPS sensor caused the cat to fail but I would think it would be the other way around since a failed cat can get extremely hot so I would say the cat probably failed and over heated which caused the CPS to fail. just my $.02

    Workin' on it....
It was fortunate it it didn't break down 30 miles in the back country where a tow truck wouldn't service.

Actually no where did I claim it was a POS. Try again. Just commenting on the usual vigorous deflection and dismissal of problems posted here. As mentioned dead and needing tow is not little issue to most people.

That's my point to all the salty turd owners saying it's just a little problem... yeah it was minor but only bc you were on a paved road near a dealership... on my trips I've been places where u don't even get cell service, how small of a problem are we talking about when your stranded in BFE with no phone service
