Truck doesn't sound good

    There are a few sounds from my truck which are really starting to bother me as it sounds unhealthy:

    1. When I accellerate fast in my truck in first or second gear it sounds horrible. Loud, resinating rough scratchy sound.

    2. When I first press the gas pedal just a bit there is a high pitch chirp sound from the engine. If I hold the pedal in just the right spot the sound will continue.

    3. When I start my truck and turn AC on there is a rough sound that comes from the engine for about 1 second. Doesn't sound good at all!

    4. Overall it has a very rough throaty sound to it, espcecially compared to my buddies trucks (2009 SR5, and 2010 SR5). It's like night and day when listening to my truck vs either of theirs.


    What are some things I can do / change that will improve the quality of how my truck sounds overall.

    I'm going to put a dynomax super turbo muffler on ASAP and see if that helps with the throaty sound and also change my spark plugs this week. I did a full synthetic oil change last week.

    Currently my 2x4 SR5 has about 51,000 KM on her and I don't drive her very hard at all.

    1) Check your accessory belt for tightness. A loose belt can chirp especially under harder acceleration.

    2 & 3) Take your accessory belt off and check all the pullys that the accessory belt drives (power steering pully, A/C pulley, alternator pulley, etc)
    Spin the pullys by hand. They should spin freely without any rough spots.
    If they do not spin freely, the bearings are probably going bad and why they're squeeling/chirping.

    Do our trucks have a serpentine belt? If so is that the same as an accessory belt?

    4.10 gears, sliders, lots of buttons, and yellow flashing lights on the dash.
    Yes. they do. You should take it into the dealer if your still under warranty.

    Thanks for the replies Chris and Janster

    I need to check my manual when I get home from work today. I think it's either 60,000km or 100,000km for warrenty on this....hopefully nothing less or I'm SOL.

    If I tell them that it's making sounds, blah blah and I think I need my serpentine belt adjusted; that should qualify this problem as being under warrenty?

    I don't know much about the belting for engines but would could I look before taking it in just so I have an idea of what needs to be done to it. Like tightness of belt or cracks or anything just so they don't tell me I needs to replace it when it only needs to be tightened.

    I pointed out the high pitch chirp sound end of last summer when it was just doing it a bit while my truck was in for something else. They told me there was nothing unusual. But not it's annoying me so I want them to fix it.

    You could open the hood - but it doesn't sound like the problem is that bad that you'd notice it just by looking.

    There is a way to check belt tightness, but I've never actually done this on these newer belts/tacomas. If you grab the sides of the belt with your finger/thumb and twist the belt - if it goes past perpendicular, then its probably too loose.

    Other than that...looking at the pulley's, if you notice any rust colored dust, or metallic shavings at the center where the bearings are...that might be a clue also.

    If you see any of that, point that out to the dealer (under warrantee).
