I have a 2019 Tacoma TRD sport 4 dr. I put a 3 inch lift kit when I first got the truck, but kept the original tires on since they were brand new. I just replaced them with Cooper Discoverer.

I went from 265-70-17 to 285-70-17. The they had to put in 1.5 inch spacer so the tires not rub while driving or turning and all is good. But, I noticed that the truck feels like if I have one foot on the breaks or something. Heavy that the transmission down shifts easy when I have to accelerate.

    Is this normal?

    Thanks!!

Most likely normal. The increase in tire weight, and the larger diameter make a big difference.

You’ll have power loss with larger tires, but shouldn’t feel like you have significant resistance. Does the truck stop a lot quicker if you’re just rolling at 10mph and let off the gas with no brake? Smell anything burning? Hear any metal grinding/friction while driving?

    Yes.

You added weight with the wider tires and the spacers.

Depending on which tires you went to/from, you likely added 15-20 lbs per wheel.

Rotational mass is the worst kind of mass addition from an acceleration stand point. A regear will fix some of that, if you want to spend a couple more thousand on it...

I didn't really notice any performance loss when I jumped up from my stock O/R Wranglers to 285/70/17's but I went with Volks and NRG's - only added about 7lbs per corner. If you added significant weight with the new setup you'll definitely feel it. Might want to get the alignment checked as well to make sure you aren't toe'd out with the new setup causing drag.

With those lift and tire specs you will be best suited with high caster UCA's and have the caster pushed forward to about 4 degrees. Was able to get properly aligned with my JBA HD high casters and the truck drives fantastic.

    Oh my!

    On a Sport too?

    I'm a long way off from a lift...at least 2 years.

Maybe I'll just go without a lift and go up one size...265/65/R17 to 270/65R17, get beefier tires and remove the splash guards.

Thanks for the heads up on your results.

In addition to the extra weight and tire rolling resistance, the larger diameter affects the driveline gearing. The engine needs to work harder to get the truck moving and to keep rolling. Changing axle gears to lower gearing will alleviate the problem, but it is an expensive job.

I would also make sure that the rear brake cable is not stretched real tight after putting on the lift.

I changed from the stock Firestones to Coopers and the same sensation happened on mine. You'll get used to it. I run higher air pressure to compensate a bit for it and it does help on the mpg as well.

Not only did you go with heavier tires but you went with larger tires, on a V6 vehicle. Yes it is normal lol.

Don't forget to wear speedo's. Jeans, jacket, long sleeves and boxers are lots of extra weight.

Driving on lower speed and so on. I do not feel any differences only when on freeway going above 70 and the road is not flat. I feel like when I try to speed up the slightest it down shifts. I am good with it and I can get used to it. Just wanted to be sure it was part of the upgrade.. to which I love it.

Thank you everyone, for the smart advice to the funny one. You guys rock!!
