I put $13 motion detectors on magnets that I stick on my truck and trailer parked outside in my driveway- they trigger a chime in my house near my bed if someone goes close to the truck or trailer. Pretty cheap but a good warning device for vehicle protection. Just mount them high enough off the ground above where cats usually walk. This system uses 9v and AA batteries and lasts months, and has good range too, over 100ft from my truck and through my stucco house walls also: Here’s the magnet I used. It’s attached to the back of the PIR sensor with a short bolt and nut:

Hey, I'm in Lolo and I've heard of several break-ins down here recently too... fortunately my truck is usually kept inside at night, but I should start being more careful.

I had my car broken into in Wisconsin, they did much more in damage to the vehicle than actual spoils. I've considered and often joke about leaving vehicles unlocked when there is nothing of value inside.

In the last month I had two camping chairs an a towel stolen out the bed of my truck. I miss the days of the unwritten code of not taking shit out the back of pick ups

If they gave a shit about you or your livelihood, they wouldn't have broken into your truck in the first place.

As someone who lives in the liberal, politically-correct, safe-space, shit-hole that is Vancouver, Canada, I fully support capital punishment for repeat offenders that do the kind of shit that was done to your truck.

In addition to the driveway sensors, Im so paranoid about theft that when I have to park the truck remotely where I cant see it or hear the alarm for shopping, inside work or going on a nearby hike, I sometimes have also left one of my walkie-talkies on in the truck in VOX mode (sound activated). Then, I just carry the other radio set to the same channel and tone. If something happens in the truck to make a noise or to set off the alarm, I can hear it a few miles away in the walkie-talkie Im carrying. I could even use it to transmit a verbal warning like “leave now, the po po are comming”.

Learned the hard lesson of not leaving anything of value in my cars years ago (except a couple dollars in change and a charging cord) . Doesn't matter where you live, even the nicest neighborhoods have their crackheads and bored teenagers. Teenagers are notorious in my area for door checking as they walk down the street. Heaven forbid you are distracted and forget to lock the doors or your kids get out and leave it unlocked. Last time they took my ashtray insert because it held all the change.

The most recent theft offense (not involving my car) was when some jerk stole my wetsuit off of my fence. I highly suspect it was a crackhead Amazon contract delivery driver. Don't they know I pissed in it???? Have fun wearing my pee suit.... House cameras are the next install.

Please leave politics out of here, sorry you have the same issues we have in So Cal there though, Vancouver is a really great city! You are right, those who keep doing this and show no respect for the rest of us have to face the consequences. I hope VC keeps its good characteristics though, Ive met some of the best people from there on my travels.

Mine won't fit in the garage which kills me, and although I consider my neighborhood safe, the "element" still comes into the area and breaks into cars. They've gotten so brazen lately that they laugh at motion lights and folks looking out the window. All they get when caught is a slap on the hand. I'd prefer a 5 iron to the knee cap.

Buddy of mine has a convertible Mercedes that was broken into 3 times by cutting the top. He now has a note he puts in the side window that says "Car is unlocked, take what you want, but please don't cut my top".

It's super convenient to have everything in the truck all the time, and if you have some sort of storage system in the cap no one will know it's there.

Mine isn't even fastened to the truck but it would absolutely kill one person if they tried to take it out themselves.

On another note, I have a friend with a wrangler who had his soft top cut so many times by people trying to steal things that he started leaving it unlocked. Had his cupholder change and dirty old hat stolen one day with several thousand dollars of lacrosse equipment in the back seat....

You're right, although I try to walk through life pretending that even sh!theads have a modicum of decency in them, hence the mild outrage. Naive? Yeah but safer in the long run than cynical, bitter wretchedness.

The one useful thing from the middle-east that we could incorporate to stop this would be to cut off hands for thievery...same person couldn't get caught more than twice. Also good deterrant to those who enjoy having 2 hands that might wanna get into thieving.

I drive around town with windows down all the time never bother to put them up when I park. If an idiot wants in my truck he will get in regardless of what I do or don’t do. Heck sometimes I think they move on as they assume nothing valuable is in it. Criminals look for signs of a valuable prize. Sometimes cameras don’t do anything and if anything they attract them as they know you are trying to protect something valuable.

Start leaving some dirty undies with skidmarks lying on the front seats, leave broken tools and parts that are useless lying everywhere, cups of chewed tobacco and juice in the cup holders and lots of food wrappers in the floorboard. Nobody will want to put their hands in that truck again! Lol!

ha! that's funny. i'm guessing you don't live in a city. thieving hobos here in seattle love to break into garages and smorgasborg rummage through every car inside. they do it on individual garages too. once in the garage it's easy to quietly steal out of vehicles where no one can see.

best bet is to leave nothing in cars, ever.
second best bet is to have an internal camera system that triggers notifications to your phone when someone is inside and records video.
