So I have a 2004 prerunner with the 3.4 and when I shift it into gear it makes a big jump(back for reverse, and forward for drive). The truck drives great, however. In addition, the truck doesn't do this all the time. It will do it for a day or 2 and then it starts to shift fine. And then it comes back. Any info on this??

Carrier bearing. Get under your truck and shake your driveshaft around looking for play.

My 02 does this also when I put it in drive and the rpm's are still higher from the engine being a little cold.

Just gotta live with it. Mine does it, drives me nuts. I've swapped out the carrier bearing, u joints are all new and tight, trans fluid is clean and recently flushed (which helped a little).

I'm convinced, on mine at least, it's partly due to the tired rear leaf springs, but mostly due to the sloppy transmission. They're known as a "slush box" for a reason.

I've noticed mine doesn't do it as much when I put the truck in neutral, set the parking brake, then put it in park. Then shift to reverse or drive before releasing the parking brake. This makes me think its the rear leaf springs, kinda like axle wrap. Setting the parking brake seems to take some stress off the rear suspension. Doesn't really make sense tho. I noticed it calmed down a little when I put u-bolts on the rear springs, but that only lasted for a few days.

Put your truck in 'Park' with e-brake off, get out, grab one of the rear tires move it back and fourth (get a friend to help if needed), look for obvious signs and noises and 'play' under the truck. Figure out why it does it, and replace that part whatever the hell it is

Mine does this when my IAC gets dirty. Keep an eye on your RPM when it does it, if your RPM is high (like above 1K) then try cleaning out TB & IAC if they haven't been cleaned in a while. Been just cleaning my IAC for years, I should replace it already.

A bad trans mount can make the truck do that too. Easy to diagnose. Just look at it. (right on crossmember). If collapsed or all the rubber looks like shit, replace.
