My 2018 Tacoma (with not quite 17,000 miles) just quit on me while on a short vacation. It is just 3 weeks past its 3 year warranty. I'll look it up when I'm back home, but I figure it has something like a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Anyway, I have $250.00 for a tow to a dealership, $500.00+ for a rental car, $150.00 motel, and a dealership estimate of $2,100.00 to fix the problem. They said the problem was an engine oil cooler pump that blew up. The Toyota dealership couldn't have been more helpful to us. I've been a devout Toyota owner for nearly 40 years, having bought 5 new vehicles during this time. What should be my next move to reclaim my expenses from Toyota considering this truck is just out of warranty? Anybody out there with a similar experience? Thanks for your ideas.

Is this not covered under the powertrain warranty? 5 years 60k miles I believe.

The 3 year / 36000 mile warranty is for most non-wear items on the truck. This sounds like it should be covered under the 5 year / 60000 mile power train warranty.

Welcome to the forum, sorry it is under bad conditions.

You stated "an engine oil cooler pump that blew up" -- I believe what you mean is the oil cooler failed.

When I bought my truck CPO the financial guy explained the power train warranty as "anything lubricated" (bearings, timing chain, etc).
If the engine oil pump failed this should be covered under 5yr/60k powertrain. The oil cooler might be a gray area.

I do realize the company is obliged to cover you 3 years and not one day over -- seeing as you are so close and also so low miles perhaps you could inquire (politely) if Toyota would cover it under a "goodwill" warranty, you would have a better chance at the dealer you purchased from.

Please let us know how it turns out.

EDIT: I wrote this on the basis of a failure from a manufacturing defect, if it was damaged by road debris, etc you will be on your own.

Based upon calling toyota for a lady co-worker with 200,000 miles on 2012 camry 4cyl, with excessive oil consumption, and the dealer here, as a customer courtesy re-ringing the engine for no charge, I would say relax man, they got this. She gave the camry to her grand daughter who is still driving it.

You, be cool, and they will be cool. You might have to contact toyota, but probably not.

Thank you for all of your quick, mostly reassuring replies. I'm not savvy enough to know if this is considered a power train warranty thing or not. The service department guy said they'd be taking pictures of the dissection/repair for their records and mine. Good for them. They initially asked whether I had hit or run over something to cause the damage---no, just normal, uneventful driving. Toyota should get parts in this Monday and start repairing that day or Tuesday. I've never had but good things to say about Toyota, so I'll stay cool and see how this plays out. I'll keep you posted in a few days.

Sounds like road debris hit the oli cooler and all the oil drained out?

Curious how most of the people with catastrophic engine failures or huge $$ repairs only find this place after the issue? This is at least the 3rd or 4th thread where the OP had a post count of 2. I apologize if I am wrong on this here , but it is interesting nonetheless.

If there is damage from being hit then insurance should cover the repair .

Most people just drive their truck. They don't learn about it, they don't mod it, they let others maintain it and live thei life. Only when problems arise do they start doing research.
They treat it like I treat my stove or refrigerator, as an appliance. I could give two shits about the regulator on my gas stove for example, until it does not regulate. Then I go and find four other people or 400 and try to fix it. Same deal.

Whats the engine oil cooler pump?
Oil cooler sits on top of the oil filter and protected by a skid plate.
Need to work on details of your "story"...

$2100 for an oil cooler seems excessive until I realized its a Toyota and thats how they make back their money for being so "reliable". $750 part. Do you know how many hours you were charged for it? I can't see more than 5 hours max to pull the cooler and replace all fluids. I suppose they're not charging $200/hr at that point.

Most owners aren't enthusiasts, they just drive the vehicle. When they have an issue, they start Googling the problem and then this site with links to their search parameters comes up. I "find" TW all the time when searching for Taco shit.

I had a Tacoma that road debri hit the radiator & made a small leak. Not repairable and not covered under warranty. If I remember correctly, a new radiator installed was quoted at about $550 (at that time).
I had bought many Toyotas from them in the past and politely ask if there was anything they could do to lower the price and the manager cut it to under $300.
That might not happen in todays market because it seems all their income is from service.

Thanks to many of you interested in helping me understand my problem. We waited at a relative's house (250 miles from the dealership repairing our truck) through the weekend. The parts were to come in Monday morning and work was to begin. We waited around yesterday (Monday) for some word on the repair. Nothing. We called the service department late in the day and were told the truck wasn't done, but was up on the rack. Bummer.
So, another night at the relatives. Today we called the dealership at 11:00 a.m. to check on the progress. They said the truck still wasn't done because "a gasket in the kit was torn and unusable and a new one had to be ordered". This gasket won't be in until tomorrow (Wed.) morning, supposedly. Not too happy. So, tomorrow my wife and I are leaving the relatives and heading down to the dealership to hopefully pick up our repaired truck. Toyota dealership service department sent 3 photos of the "repair", but, honestly what was shown wasn't much help to me. So, the saga continues again tomorrow. Stay tuned.
