Since I started driving, I've always used both. Don't ask me why. I pull in, set the parking brake, and put it in gear.

I play it safe. I only hurl insults at them during tea time so they don't notice. ;)

The mechanic we have work on our cars a lot told me to put my 87 toyota pickup in 4wd low to help hold it on hills because the parking brake could possibly lock (and did) if i used it.

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
    What?
The clutch is out, no slippage...this makes no sense.
Use first or Reverse, you want the lowest gear ratio to maximize what is basically engine braking to hold your truck in place.
I do it all the time, but need to use parking brake to hold in place in my driveway.
Also, in the mountains, I use my p-brake to hold the truck all the time, unless in 4w low.

The OP says he parks his truck in first gear and it rolls forward, wouldn't that be the same as jumping in your truck and trying to start it in first gear without pressing the clutch ? Isn't that why with the newer model vehicles you have to fully depress the clutch or they won't start ?
