I'm looking to build essentially a lockable box that can go inside of my cab to store valuables (think professional camera equipment).

-Ideally this goes into the cab, and not the bed (I have a canopy) as I feel everything will be safer inside.

    -lockable

    -somewhat discrete

-approximately 30gallon/2 ft x 2 ft or so capacity

    -bolted/locked into truck

Any ideas about how to do this? Or links/photos of what others have done?

    Thanks.

I guess "gun safes" might be a decent place for me to start looking.

I just bought and installed a console vault by these people:
    http://www.mobilesecurityplusstore.com/

It was considerably cheaper than "console vault" brand. I used a code for a 15% discount (LD2012). It seems to be exactly the same construction as the CV brand and I got a 4 number lock without additional cost. There was a shipping cost.

It took about 20 mins to install. I believe that there is a 5-10% loss of volume, but as I have almost nothing but a few maps in the console it is not an issue. Whether the console area is big enough for your photo equipment is unknown to me.

The problem with making one on your own (yes I am a cheap SOB myself) was the fact that to be useful, the metal has to be of a thick gauge. This means, of course, that it would be tough to bend yourself. Plus how would you make a useful pattern mold for the bends that was not cost prohibitive for a self-build. In addition, you have to get a lock that will at least stand up to some attack.

So, all in all, the cost of a console safe is within reason and worth it if only for the peace of mine.
