I get to about 55-65 mpg and I go to slow down. The whole truck shakes and I don't have a clue what it could be. My brakes are relatively new and my tires don't have 5k on them. Also every single bump I hit it sounds like a rattle coming from the back half of my truck. I have been under it and tried to see what it is, nothing. Any suggestions on the shaking or the rattle?

Sounds like a warped rotor to me.... take it to Autozone or whatever is close and have them turn the rotors and drums see if it helps. I am sure there is a way to check them if they are warped but that is beyond what I know :).

I'm with Dan, sounds like rotors. Mine was doing the same thing when I purchased it. I replaced the pads/rotors and it drove like new again.

As for the rear sounding like that, it's probably just worn out leaves/shocks. My 03 DCSB feels like what you are describing and its def just worn rear suspension.

'Slowing down' is a bit vague.

Does this happen with brake application only, or both braking and coasting, or coasting only? Does the pedal pulse underfoot with light application?

Doubtful the 'bump and rattle' are related to the 'shaking issue', but they could be.

If your problem is under braking only, you mention fairly new brakes being on the truck. Did you follow a proper bedding procedure when they were installed? (Google if you don't know what that means) If not, you may just need to scuff the rotor faces with some 3m pads and do the bedding now.

As a side note, there is some good reading on the StopTech site on rotor 'warping' if you want to learn more.

When I hit the brakes, the whole truck shake steering wheel and all. It rattle when I slow down too. Also when it hit any bump on the road it makes that noise. my truck has 190k on it and as far as I know its never gotten shocks

Replace the shocks. But shocks shouldn't shake the truck with braking. If your steering wheel is shaking, your rear shocks aren't a consideration. It's something on your front axle.

Most 'warped' rotors aren't actually warped at all. Brakes can glaze a rotor, gives it slick and sticky spots. As the brakes go from stick to slide, you'll get vibration. This can definitely happen with brand new brakes so new brakes alone don't eliminate the possibility.

I've got a similar problem with my son's 4Runner. I'm about 95% sure it's the steering rack. I'll let you know when the parts order gets delivered and installed.

Very possible it's warped rotors. Could be a stuck piston in the brake calipers. Could also be a leaky brakeline not holding pressure. That can cause the brakes to pulse. Also check your wheels and make sure all the lugs are tight. If any of them are loose the shaking would probably happen all the time, but still worth checking.

As for the rattle, make sure the rear leaf spring ubolts are TIGHT. Check the shackle bolts. I've seen the nuts on shackle bolts work loose and the shackle and spring will shift side to side and make noise. Shackles should be snug but not too tight.

there is an exhaust heat shield above the muffler. Its thin and can rot out and rattle and make noise.

Also check your spare tire, and spare tire mount/winch. That could be loose, rotting.

Steering rack could be part of the problem but would probably show signs all the time and not just while braking. It's a good idea to check the steering rack and bushings for excessive play.

I had the same shaking when braking. Got new rotors and it helped a lot but it still shakes (not nearly as much) when braking sometimes. Appears to be worse going downhill. What else could it be?

New Navigation DVD/CD/TV/AV/Bluetooth Stereo and seat mod spacers, 1" hubcentric spacers, seat heaters....
driveline, center support bearing, u-joints, broken rear leafs, warped rotors, motor mounts, front struts and or rear shocks...this is just a short list to get started on...if you are not mechanically inclined, you need to find a good Toyota mechanic to inspect and recommend needed repairs...

it is hard to diagnose based on either of your posts...I had a vibe in mine, took awhile to pin all the problems down...my list of things that needed fixing, rotors, center support bearing, struts and shocks, inner and outer tie rods, front sway bar bushings and steering rack bushings...presently at 283,000 and running smooth as glass....yours has a lot of miles so any or all of the above may apply...

also, one last suggestion, when you get your rims/tires balanced make sure the shop uses a Haweka adapter when balancing, trust me, it makes all the difference in the world with Toyota wheel/rim balancing....been there, done it...

good luck with the problem solving...

check your ujoints/carrier bearing/control arm bushings/motor and tranny mounts. your control arm bushings could easily do everything you mentioned. when was the last alignment? get one if it's been a while. they should inspect all the bushings as part of the alignment. no sense in doing an alignment if they're bad is the typical thought process.

the rattling may be from disconnected welds inside your tail gate. open the tailgate and slam on the inside with a fist. see if you hear a rattling. and hit it while closed, just don't dent it! if that's the situation, you can get foam weatherstripping and place it between the loose metals

as mentioned by others, improperly or non resurfaced rotors will cause extreme shaking even during slight breaking.
