    Yes.

By the time you mechanically cut the key to fit the lock, then manage to hack the electronics (have to REALLY know what you are doing, and might be near impossible outside of the dealership), you could have already hooked up the tow truck and been gone.

I've had keys made at the dealer. It took them a half an hour to program the keys. I'm told that it takes longer without a functional key to start with, and that they have to actually hook their computer to Toyota corporate in order to reset the computer.

There are ways around everything, but a repo style tow truck is fastest. In a busy parking lot, no one would look twice. If you're worried about it, post a lookout in a suit and tie, everyone thinks he owns the truck.:(

I'd just moved out to the West Coast when someone tried to seal my '87 Toyota truck in a shopping center parking lot in broad daylight. I got back just in time to prevent it but still was out a window, a steering column cover and an ignition switch.

I went back into the store after filing the police report and bought a steering wheel lock, it may not deter a dedicated thief but if it makes one hesitate and move on to the next car it's OK by me. Nobody messed with my "Clubbed" vehicles for the next ten years I lived out there, even though there were several cars stolen from the parking lot, most with car alarms. Nobody ever paid attention to car alarms because they went off all the time when a minor earthquake hit or a truck drove by (the trash truck would set off a dozen every Tuesday morning). Another guy had a "Club" too -- his car wasn't messed with either.

It looks dorky but my insurance company gives me $20 off my premium every six months for using the thing so, if nothing else, it's paid for itself and a couple of week's worth of groceries. Supposedly, the company will pay your comprehensive deductible if your car is stolen too.

Sorry to hear about this OP, hopefully they find it soon. And I doubt that the VIN thing is true. My truck came with PermaVIN security, which is basically when they put the VIN on everything they can. If it is true then I'm screwed because my VIN # is etched into every glass panel on my truck

That sucks if nothing else maybe they can get one of the guy's that stole it or are helping selling things off of it. I know when my aunt's Range Rover got stolen the theives took thing's like the frame, cats, radiator and other odds and ends that you couldn't sell in the aftermarket without raising some suspicion and the guy's at the scrap yard called the law after they left and the peace officers ran the vin's off the parts and of course it came back stolen. They arrested the sellers and charged them with stealing the vehicle and the sale of stolen parts.

unfortunately, most scrap yards aren't that honest. i wish they were otherwise there wouldn't be such a high demand for stolen cats for example.

Sorry guys, haven't been able to give u any updates. I've been pretty bummed, since this is the 2nd time my ride has gotten stolen from me. I don't know what to do from here, I miss the thing but now I don't even want it back anymore not knowing what they did with the dam thing. My truck got stolen in union city. The thing I'm wondering is how they were able to steal it... I thought you need a chip in the key to start it? These guys must've known what the hell they we're doing.....

Nah can't be a tow truck. There was broken glass where my truck was parked. It was parked in the Walmart parking lot... So much for Walmart parking lot security!!

Is the truck a stick? Can they still push start it while jamming a screw driver into the ignition?

But yes, WM is known for having a few hundred security cameras. I bet it's on there. Matter of fact, I'm pretty darn sure it's on ONE of their cameras. And they use the type that are good at zooming with crisp results. Trust me on this. They zoomed onto my plate and I got kicked off of the lot.

You can tell by your key also if you have a transponder or not. Near the head of you key on the metal part. one side will have a small little circle on it, which means you have the transponder

None of that matters if he had an aftermarket alarm capable of bypassing it.
