My son's and i were putting a shooting house on some land this season. I have 4x4 excursion, but knew i would hi-center. My son's Tacoma has larger tires and a small lift. We started into the mud. It was doing great and suddenly it was like we dumped the accelerator. It would immediately rev back up and start turning the tires and repeat. It did it every time all 4 were pulling. No idea what would cause it to idle down and stop pulling only to resume pulling again. Left is us in quite a mess. Also, the selector will NOT allow us to turn it to 4 low. I'm new to the Yota's. Any help appreciated.

Are you manual? I am curious go see if you find anything out as my truck does sorta similar things when I am in 4x, but not as bad as you are describing.

As for 4lo you need to be in 4hi, completely stopped and if manual in neutral and clutch all the way to the floor. If you are an auto I believe you just need to be stopped and in neutral. There should be a card in the drivers sun visor that explains everything (and in the manual)

In 4HI there are traction and stability systems active. Use the button to toggle these. You can get to alternate modes by pressing the button and by long pressing at a stop. Long press gives you all the wheel spin you want.

It'll go into 4LO just follow the instructions.

Yeah, if you're going into the slick stuff in 4 Hi, you need to turn off traction control or when you start to spin, it will drop out the throttle. If you're going to be spinning the tires, one quick push will keep it from regulating throttle but will still activate vehicle stability, one long press while stopped will shut it all off completely and will 'let it eat'.
Have him read the traction control section of his owner's manual.

Thanks gentlemen. Yes, he is auto transmission. We had wondered if it was the traction control. I appreciate so much the feedback. We definitely needed her to “eat”. A lot of work with a come-a-long, disconnecting the trailer and skidding it on a 2x4 to winch it out of the mud etc..... but two good whitetail bucks are in the ice chest. Thanks again.
