    Exactly. Anyone who believes that the "codes" are infallible doesn't understand how it works. It's just a damn machine, it can only regurgitate what was programmed into it. Expecting a vehicle's code reporting to be accurate is naive when the system isn't fully functional

    The OP's truck died, as in ceased to function as a mode of transportation.

    Read this whole post and he was #1- original owner #2 very few miles. I’m second owner and almost 50,000 miles. I’m contacting Toyota Corp customer care and going to go from there.

    They opened a case with Toyota tech, so they had to do what Toyota told them. Am I satisfied? No, but at their mercy at the moment. Not in the financial state to trade, but will be opening a case with Toyota and hope for the best.

    Yes, I understand you didn't buy it new. I wasn't implying that the dealer would give you a new vehicle, it was to demonstrate that youwere having similar if not the exact same symptoms. And also that after the dealer traded trucks with the poster, they finally put in a $100 CPS and declared the truck was fixed. Another oddity to this whole CPS mess was that sometime early in the process, owners had CPS replaced but the old original part was still floating around in some inventory, some of those got to experience the fiasco twice. There is some info on here about the markings on the cPS that identify the new improved part.
    Sorry you are having all this trouble

    Thanks, appreciate it. It may come down to me having my husband’s mechanic change it for me. Lots to figure out. What are your thoughts on aftermarket CPS? Or just stick w/Toyota?

    Some things I can understand are easily diagnosed... but come on. :bananadead:

    Wasn't directed at you so much as the other local advisors. With how much cars have advanced, mechanics don't/can't have the same free thinking skill set they used to. No more basic troubleshooting, plug it on in. For me, I'm limited to what I can do based off of tech data. You shoot off a troubleshooting tree due to probability (which doesn't account for every situation). Hopefully you get squared away.

    I wrote service for a multi badged GM dealership in the 80’s. Truth be told, more men brought vehicles in for pittly things than the women. I tried to tell a guy how to change his own fuse, but he chose instead to pay $50 for a mechanic to do it.... ... Several weeks later a woman came in with a blown fuse, told her what to do and she did it.

    I'm not sure if an aftermarket option is available, but if there is I would not be afraid of it. Often but not always, the aftermarket supplier is the same company suppling the OEM parts to the Mfgr.

    I was an early buyer, so as the CPS debacle was happening, I half expected it to happen to me at anytime. 4 years and 42,000 miles later I've dodged the bullet so far. By the original notice my VIN was before the supposedly affected vehicles, but others have had the issue that were not included in the recall as well.

    There is no guarantee the CPS is the problem with your truck, but there is a very clear commonality of the symptoms displayed. It's a low cost option (relatively, I know it's easy to spend someone else's money) If it were me in the same boat, I'd buy the CPS and slap it on, if it works I'm relieved, if not it didn't break the bank. In any case I hope you get this resolved, overall it's a good light duty truck and I hate to have to trade mine off because I couldn't count on it.

    It is totally surprising that there should be ANY guessing on what’s wrong with a vehicle these days. My service advisor told us that the way they checked the ECU was tap it with a hammer. He clarified that was NOT Toyota protocol, but that mechanic learned years ago it would work... what do I know?

    Sorry to hear about this fiasco with your Tacoma. If I was the 2nd owner in your situation;

    -Contact corporate and explain the situation
    -Replace the CPS with an OEM Toyota part

    I would need to check the records, but thinking about 12,000 total... it was about 1 year ago it was towed the first time, then again about 6 weeks later, then this time about 10 months
