3.4L ? Had this happen to me a few times over the years. I can't remember the possible issues that can cause it. What is your mileage? Fuel filter, air filter , spark plugs up to date? Have you cleaned MAF lately? If all good there. Might be good time to reset ECU. Oh, if it continues coould be weak fuel pump.

    Please add more details.

How long was the truck sitting before starting?

Does it turn over normal like you recall?.

    What engine/transmission?

Did this ever occur in the past?

Burnt smell? are you referring to oil? There is something you do with gas pedal too. You press it 100 times. I can't remember if you have the key in the" on " position or not. That is suppose to clean or reset something with the fuel system. koditten might be able to clarify. He is pretty knowledgeable.

I'm wondering if you have leakybfuel injectors.

You said it was sitting for a while, then it struggled to start. That is a symptom of bad injectors.

I have 154k on my 03 and my valve covers need replaced too But I keep everything else in top order. Just replaced factory exhaust, catback last year and installed new O2 sensor and A/F sensor Truck runs like it did new. Oh, I read somewhere Marvel mystery oil is hard on catalytic converters. I believe in that stuff and use it on my lawn equipment only now.
If all the stuff I mentioned is in good order? I would try and reset your ECU and look up the gas pedal procedure. It's on here somewhere.

Good point kod! I didn't think about that. That is or can be an issue with the 3.4. I have been lucky so far.

Sounds like a bad head gasket. I've been through three.
