Hi all. This has been an issue with my 2012 Tacoma for the past couple months. It doesn't happen every time I try to start it, if fact, it doesn't happen most of the time. But when it does it usually successfully starts after 5-10 tries. My concern is growing as I am in the Bay Area, which is 1000 miles from home and it's been getting worse recently.

The Toyota dealership said it's probably my after market remote start and so there's nothing they can do about it. However, I don't think this is correct, because the problem persists when I disconnect the remote start completely. Interestingly, the truck always starts using the remote start. I had the remote start installed four years ago and have had no problems.

I don't think it's my fuel pump because I can hear it buzz when I turn the ignition on. Also, the dealership said the fuel pump looks fine. My suspicion is that it's my anti-theft system. My reasoning is that the remote start always starts the truck because it bypasses the antitheft system. What do you guys think?

Once you let aftermarket installers mess with your electrical system, there’s no telling what they did. And I’m sure if you take it back, the guy that did it doesn’t work there anymore.

Right, that's true. But since the remote start worked fine for years with no problem what so ever, i'm inclined to think that thats not the issue.

Do you have the Immobilizer key or RF key? If so is it going all the way into the key slot? Other wise I would disable the anti thief system.

I have an immobilizer and yes it goes all the way into the slot. I'd rather fix it then disable it if possible. At this point I've pretty much narrowed it down to the immobilizer. If I order a replacement do I need to have it programed at the dealership or could I do that myself?

Not sure about yours but my 2015 has to be programmed at either the dealership or a automotive locksmith that has the capability to do. There are dealerships here (do a search ) online that will sell you the official key blank but it needs to be cut and programmed. There may be folks who have better answers.
