Trying to diagnose why my Tacoma is turning over several times before starting. Does anybody know if the fuel pump turns on when the key is in the “on” position? Trying to hear if it primes the gas lines before starting up. I’m also going to clean the MAF sensor, TPS, and throttle body and change out spark plugs since they’re relatively cheap fixes and they probably need to be serviced anyway. I don’t think it’s a fuel injector problem because I’m not getting any codes related to them. Any other suggestions would be appreciated

What year, what engine? Dies the same on cold or hot starts. We need more deets.

I know my 04 the fuel pump turns on with just the key in the on position.

Fuel pump turns on when crank position sensor see's RPM.

I would change fuel filters if you haven't yet.

It’s a 2002 with the 3rz-fe. Sometimes it starts after two or three cranks, other times it takes like 5-6 seconds before it finally starts up. Doesn’t seem to be related to cold vs warm start. Occasionally it’ll vibrate slightly at red lights. I notice sometimes when idling it bounces around a very tiny bit, maybe 50-100 rpm, but nothing too serious. She idles around 750 rpm when warmed up.

I haven’t yet. I don’t remember seeing the last time it was changed in the service records so it’s probably due for it. Just want to try the less expensive approaches first before changing out parts. I know the filter is relatively inexpensive though.

See right now it started up perfectly but about an hour ago when I came out to listen for the fuel pump it turned over like 5 or 6 times before I started up…

I might have found part of the problem. Pulled ignition coil #1 to change the spark plugs and found it flooded with oil :annoyed: think I need to replace the valve cover gasket and see if that helps. Got to clean the MAF sensor and throttle body though!

Only if you hot wired the fuel pump to by pass the EFI relay and Circuit opening relay

Installed a old style Circuit opening relay from pre Tacoma engines

    Not convinced.

The fuel pump will run to pressurize the fuel regulator, then shut off. It happens very quick.

The only reason I found this out is I have a leaky injector. Had the key on while eating lunch in the truck so I could charge my phone.

I could feel and hear the fuel pump run cycle.

Also the truck didn't start vary good with all that fuel in the intake.

Where is this Truck ?? Just what engine ? What year? (2004) I am thinking 3.4 am I wrong?

You had your key turned all the way to run to charge your Phone My Toyota`s all will charge on accessory .

None of my 3.4 Engines will prime the fuel line .

    This has me curious .

It has to prime the fuel system.

Otherwise when the injectors are energized to open, no fuel will flow until the pump pressurizes the system to 40 psi.

The fuel pump runs as soon as you turn the key, the injectors don't fire until the engine has turned over sufficiently.

Truck is home in Michigan, at least it's supposed to be. Yes 3.4.

Something is running intermittent when the key is on.

Like I said, I'm not convinced the FP doesn't energize when the key is turned to the on position.

I agree, I was always under the assumption that the FP did not energize until 2 revolutions of the crank. With the way mine acts, I don't fully believe that.

Alright so I changed the valve cover gasket, the spark plugs, and tube seals and I’m still getting the excessive cranking. I used the same coils, not sure if it’s recommended to replace them after being so soaked in oil. Trucks running fine otherwise. What should be my next step?

    No OBDII codes????
    Crazy.
Could start tossing sensors at it

But I wouldn’t unless ‘something’ pointed me in some direction

    BTW slymedusa
No codes and my 2.4 absolutely would not start when hot(15-20 cranks easily)
    Injectors cured the issue
    46lbs on my FP gauge

So I do have a few codes, all related to evap system. From my research it doesn’t seem related to the turning over issue but maybe I’m missing something… I made another post a month ago that has my findings from those codes. Since I live in FL I’m not in a hurry to fix it.

I have a can of seafoam that I was planning to add to my gas tank if this didn’t work. I’m gonna give it a shot in half a tank of gas
