    3.39. Ouch.

Should be a law that every MT reverse gear has to be 5:1 or better lol.

Oh wow, even the transfer case ratio sucks for you manual guys. Least they could have done is give you a 4:1 low since you don't have a torque converter.

Ive had an occasional burning clutch smell in all of my vehicles, including this taco. It’s ok if it’s very minor and it happens once in a while. Never had to replace a clutch on any of my vehicles by the way.

When I read that the OP was stuck for like 9 hours and tried to get out in R in 4hi, then that’s a different story.

Yes! IMHO It’s a must on a 3rd gen MT.

My rangers reverse was the same though, could go like 40 miles an hour in reverse. I’ve always used 4lo at the boat ramps and maneuvering a trailer, otherwise bye bye clutch. Ranger forum did not have the smart dudes that made the 2WD LOW mod.

I keep forgetting to use 4lo when stuck on ice/snow, I used 4hi for years in my old auto trucks. So far I've only smelt burning clutch once, thankfully, when I had to reverse off a patch of ice in a parking lot.

Burning your clutch on ice in a parking lot? Are you sure it wasn’t your tires that were burning?

I personally don’t think 4lo is necessary in a parking lot unless you are trying to climb a large snow pile left by a plow.

I was nose up to a wall, ice under the rear tires and frozen snow under the front tires, I wasn't thinking and didn't want to get a traction board out so I rocked the truck a few times to get out in reverse.
I roast the hell out of my Miata clutch so I know the smell lol.

Do what in reverse; back out of a parking spot or climb a 6’ snow pile?

I don’t understand why you would need to use a lot of clutch in that situation. Typically I would let the ice do the clutching for me. Also I’ve never found rocking back and forth useful in 4wd because you don’t have 1 set of tires trying to roll up on top of the snow. Did you perhaps mean you were using 2hi rather than 4hi?

Wait, so the truck was sitting in the snow for ten hours or you were attempting to get it out for ten hours?? I think my truck would have ran out of gas three times before all that.

The truck was at a slight downward angle facing the wall, the wall was about a foot from my front bumper so I was worried about rolling forward into it.
My rear tires were just spinning on the glare ice, no grip at all. I put it in 4hi instead of going 4lo or using a board because I figured it was going to be a quick out. Turned out I had to gas it, let off, let the truck roll forward a bit, and gas it again.
If I had just used 4lo I probably could have slowly rolled out.

Surprisingly enough I was one of the first to drive through town (in my 94 JDM mini truck) after we got around 12” of snow on top of ice, never burned the clutch even though to my knowledge I have never driven a manual in such conditions. Was pretty fun, but not having power in our house got old after about twelve minutes.
