Truck was stuck in snow. Now it feels sluggish and horrible (Manual Transmission)

I will tell you from experience, using 4hi when I should’ve been in 4L when I first got my 21 taco, cost is $2400 from the dealer out the door to replace clutch.

You can tell we're getting excited when we start bickering over quote quotas. Where's OP with the service proposal when we need him?

I'm back. Nothing was fixed but a software update. I was received the famous TSB0043-20

Dealer said they couldn't find anything wrong with the Truck

The truck itself feels different in throttle response and shifting feels more "nicer" but I can still feel that damn drag

It's there in the high speed. You can't really feel it but it's there

I plan on flushing the differential and tranny fluid. Debating on replacing my front brakes and drum shoes/pads depending how they look like once removed or maybe just bleed the brake system

Have you ever seen those DIY cover videos where they use Ramen noodle to patch and buff then seal? Yeah that's how I feel about this Truck

I might just wait after flushing the fluids and see how it goes then call Toyota if it doesn't get resolved

Welcome back! I’m surprised but not surprised at the same time lol. In all honestly I hope you can get your truck back to feeling how you like it.

Yeah. As I left the parking lot I was extremely happy it felt normal again but once I got onto the HWY hitting 60 going onto 70 I felt that crap. :(

I did this in an S2000 when I was a wee lad, not nearly as bad though. There's no confusing clutch smoke smell for tire smoke smell.

This is a confusing statement. It sounds like all of this is in your head?
But you made it sound like a roasted clutch. Did you test it using the methods suggested in this thread?

Maybe you’re just driving into the wind? This thing has the aerodynamics of a brick.

When exactly did the truck feel fine to you? When it was stock? When were the heavier tires put on it? Other mods? How’s your mileage now vs. before the snow burial?
I still think you’re leaving out info somewhere.

I think you're correct. OP race another 3.5 Tacoma and let us know the results.

ok - After all the build up, I feel the season finale just hasn't delivered. Bummer.

On the upside, even though the issue was not the clutch (assume the dealership verified this), my awareness about using 4 lo in more circumstances, the potential importance of the 2 lo mod, and generally, being more careful about my clutch when stuck or moving through difficult terrain, has greatly increased. I really had not been giving it much thought, despite having grown up in a family where the number one mantra was "don't ride the clutch!."

So on the whole, I'm grateful, and giving this thread 4 out 5 stars.

That's because the S2000 produced 10 ftlbs of torque at 5000 rpm and you could not feel the engagement:rofl:

Had a similar issue in my 2010, it came from pulling the clips and screws free from the front bumper when I was hung up. Couldn’t see or feel anything at low speed, but higher speeds it would start flopping around and make the aerodynamics in the truck even worse, which is really obvious in the manuals. I would check to see if anything is missing up front

Ok, so what causes drag in a vehicle while driving. Tires, trans, axles, brakes. So you have ruled out most of it. How about alignment? Is it possible that your camber and toe is out and causing drag?

I feel much the same way. Immediately previous to my 2021 Tacoma I owned a 2006 Nissan Xterra (305,000 mi) and a 1991 4Runner (272,000 mi) — all with manual transmissions and used 4 hi anytime I was stuck without putting any thought to it. I have a cabin up north with a slight incline in the driveway. When it snows, I many times have to put it in 4 hi to back out. Now I am afraid to do it. Can anyone point me to a reference on how to use 4WD to get my vehicle unstuck without damaging the clutch or other parts of the drivetrain? What is the point of having 4WD if it isn’t to use it to get you unstuck? Incidentally, I did purchase the 2lo mod, which came yesterday and I have not yet installed.
