    I'm betting $17 it's the battery.

Guess I meant the last time he couldn’t get it to start. If he started it just fine several times, then couldn’t, sounds like the battery could hold a charge fine but wasn’t getting charged. All I’m saying is something very similar happened to me, and in my case it was the alternator. Sounds like a new battery wouldn’t hurt if it’s that old and original anyway.

The draw from a starter is huge. If you're starting and stopping it in succession, there isn't enough time for the alternator to do its job. Coupled with dying OEM cells, betterie ist leer!

Take the truck to a battery store or parts store as most will load test the battery, check terminals, voltage regulator, alternator etc. for no charge.

It’s NOT your alternator. Your truck requires electricity to run, if you alternator was not creating said electricity then you truck will only run for the length of charge your battery has. Since you can jump it, and continue to run the truck until it’s turned off. Clearly it’s not your alternator.
Battery would be first thing to check, after that some electrical components that may be messed up and are draining the battery while the truck it turned off.

I'm sure you'll get it figured out and fixed up. There's always good help here, and of course at least a little :crapstorm:from time to time but mostly in good fun.

you are incorrect. Bad alternator produces no charge. Uses battery power till its used up then wont start. Then burns up the battery..

I don’t think his alternator is broken, I think it’s dirty. It could still be generating some power, just not enough to run the truck and charge the battery. OP also said he drove the truck for 20 miles, so it may not have even been running for very long. I don’t think OP stressed the truck enough to break anything. Curious to see how this pans out.

Also, it the diodes go bad in the alternator, then it will run the truck just fine, but not charge the battery. The symptom will be runs just fine, but won't start.

Load test the battery. Will tell you what whether the battery is good or bad.

I felt like undershooting was more acceptable than over haha. Truth be told, I didn't know the numbers. But I knew it was over 15a haha.
