This used to happen in my old ford ranger ALL the time. It’s annoying, but not a huge deal OP. that truck driver probably broke them loose right away if there are no drag marks from the tires. You’re good.

I know this thread is old, but the same thing happened to me today. After going back to park, reverse, etc with no luck, I cycled the parking brake and pumped the brake pedal a few times. I have no idea which one of those fixed it, but it worked and I had no further issues the rest of the day. After reading this thread, I am sure this happened because I washed it a couple of weeks ago and it has sat unmoved in the garage until today.

So the lever is coming out of park though? Seems like a seized drum. I have only experienced this in winter (2nd gen) How many mileage on your trucks?

I had this same exact problem.washed it on a humid Wednesday.backed it into the garage and didn't drive it until Friday night. Went to drive it and put it in drive and it would not budge..put it in reverse would not budge..put it in 4 wheel drive and it dragged back tires out of of garage then broke lose and no problem. Called Toyota and they said bring it in because they have never heard of this. They had it for two days and could not duplicate..it is a 2019 with 19,000 miles. It has driven fine since it happened but this has to have happened to more people

Any more info on this issue and fix? First couple times ever had this happen... perhaps same or maybe different? Take off ebrake, able to reverse, then when putting into drive it only engages one wheel and or one feels like its not getting power, engine mildly revs but the traction loss lights come on. Half dozen park, drive, reverse shifts, engage 4wd and dissengage and it eventually gets into gear and problem doesnt exist....

Had this happen 2x after washing the truck. No parking brake used. I used a bit of throttle and one wheel broke loose and spun before both broke loose. No code. It definitely is strange when it happens.

I take it no resolve or answers just happens and then doesnt for a long while? The strange part to me is reverse seems to work fine its just the drive function that then fumbles for several minutes and takes fussing with gear changes and 4wd to 2wd engages.

Banged on the drums with hammer, put it on 4L. Then I pushed the gas hard until the drums released. thanks to @specter208

Have had this happen on mine after I wash it and park in the garage for a day. Best solution is to realllllly push hard on the brake pedal a few times. Seems to break it free.

A few months back we were driving my GF's 4 runner it was the coldest day here this winter stupid of me but put in 4wd to get through some drifts. Couldn't get it back to 2wd and then couldn't shift could use the gear shifter and change gears but no action a little bit of grinding. Tow truck to Toyota it must have thawed out cuz it was fine after the weekend.

The brake shoes are semi metallic meaning they have bits of metal imbedded in the shoes. Setting the parking brake with wet drums and shoes causes rust to form between them. So they “freeze” or bond together

didn’t have that problem in the good ole days of asbestos brake pads

I have never had this issue, even when camping with other 3rd gens that did freeze up from some water crossings we went through. I use my parking brake every time I park. I wonder if the constant use of the parking brake somehow keeps this problem from happening? Maybe I'm just lucky.
