So I was replacing a a damaged cv boot today and had the front of my 2011 Tacoma jacked up on jackstands. I was working on the right side and had the right tire off the truck. I needed to turn the wheel so I attempted to start the truck. When I turned the key, I got a bunch of flashing lights, but the starter never engaged. Now that the truck is back on the ground, I’m getting similar indications. Any ideas on what the heck I did or how I can fix it? I attempted to jumpstart the truck and no luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Could be related or not. Do you have any codes?

Did the abs sensor wire on that side get stretched and damaged. It runs over the top control arm.

I need to get a code reader. But could having the truck jacked up and a tire off and trying to start it cause something like that to happen?

That should not have caused a problem. You sure your battery is well charged and well connected?

Will update soon, just had the battery tested and it’s bad. This is a massive coincidence if it’s just a battery since the truck has been cranking up fine.

Sometimes a battery that tests bad can be brought back. If you don’t have a decent battery charger, you can try jump charging it with another running car. Same as jump starting, just leave it connected for maybe 30 minutes. But if the battery is more than 4 years old, I’d replace it.

Maybe you had a door open, or music playing to run the battery down? Do the battery terminals look like snowballs?

Or just a bad starter? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That is strange...I can't think of anything that would have caused that from working on a cv axle.

    Any resolution?

    It depends.
You can’t test a battery if it isn’t at a full charge.
You charge it, then test. If it won’t take a charge, you buy a new battery.

It depends on the tester you (they) used.

Anyways, it would be a coincidence for sure. Keep us updated.

So just a crazy coincidence but it was a bad battery. Had it tested and it was shot. Cranked right up after new battery. Didn’t mean to waste everyone’s time, still just shocked that it decided to completely die when I tried starting the truck while up on jackstands and the front tire off. Thanks for all the replies guys.

I deal with it all the time at the shop, the battery has just enough to start the vehicle but leave the key on for a few min checking for codes or diagnosing something and go to start it and "click" :annoyed:

Most people don't realize their battery is on it's way out until it doesn't start the vehicle.
I would say about 40% of the vehicles that come in have a weak or bad battery, but it still starts the vehicle (as long as they don't sit with the key on for a few min) so they get by with it.

Can't wait to how many of these vehicles with the start/stop bs start leaving people stranded when the batteries and starters start dying (already had to rescue a couple), maybe then they will realize how much of a bad idea it is.

Anyway srry for the rant, glad you got it going and it was minor:thumbsup:

Usually there’s slow crank before it dies. But occasionally it’s not enough to notice until the new battery is in, then it’ll seem like it cranks fast.

I had one showing 4v, got it started with my capacitor jump starter but the alternator was straining like crazy. Shut if off, cleaned the snowballs off the terminals, brushed terminals and posts, ended up replacing the battery, it wouldn’t take a charge.
