I would replace the chain. Not sure about the tensioner, but if it's relatively cheap I would. If you trust the word or your mechanic, let him be the judge.

I spoke to a Toyota parts guy. He said the belt isn't usually changed out unless it is worn. I'm considering just changing the tensioner. Will talk to the mechanic tomorrow. Its pretty much down to what is more cost effective. I'm already gonna drop over a grand on the head.

Also, is there a third party who makes the chain set? I want to get OEM but if it is a rebranded part, I will get the less expensive brand.

Alot of components like that are made by Aisin. So check if you can find that in that brand. Alot of other smaller parts and usually electronic stuff like sensors and such are made by Denso, but they are usually branded fairly obviously with their name. But yeah most stuff under the hood is made by Aisin!

    Complete rebuild at 197k miles
DNJ makes a decent timing chain set (both chains, tensioner, crankshaft No. 1 sprocket, etc.). I put it on my 2.7 when I did the full rebuild.

Ok, mechanic removed the head, and found sugar in the cylinders. He said it was hardened around the piston rings. I cant figure out who would put sugar in the gas tank. Looks like I'll be needing a locking gas cap.

Mechanic scraped all the sugar off, cleaned the cylinders and reassembled the head. He told me to put a half quart of atf in the gas tank at every fill up. He already did this when I picked it up, no codes and it ran normal but sounds a little crazy to me. We have no idea how much sugar is in there. I suppose the right way to do it would be to drop the gas tank and drain it.

Sugar, really? Man people fucking suck, sorry to hear that OP. I can't imagine how crappy that feels. There any punk kids in your neighborhood? This makes me want to get a locking cap, too. Then again if someone is really intent on messing with a car, there are countless other ways. People suck.

seams like "if he is a good trustworthy mechanic" that he should have drained, dropped, and flushed the tank for you, but yes, if he did not do that, then I would definitely drop and flush the tank really good

security cam systems are very cheap today, you should put them up and check the video when anything happens. if they mess with your truck then they surely messed with your car or anything else accessible to them around your house too.

just my 2 cents, but I think sugar in gas tank is an adult type thinking and not really a thing kids think to do, kids would key your paint job or let air out of your tires or put nails under them. if I were you I would think about which one of your neighbors did it

I cant think of anyone that would do that. I live in a pretty safe neighborhood. I think it was a random crime, may have occurred at the store or something. I ordered a locking gas cap. Sucks cause I hate carrying a bunch of keys in my pocket. The truck has been running normal. I filled up the tank yesterday and added another half quart of atf. Mileage has been normal so far.
