Truck's anti-theft system prevents Pop 'n' Lock to open tailgate

I have a diamond back cover on my bed. After the gym this morning, I threw my gym bag into the bed and closed the tailgate. Just as I was about to open the back seat door to get my work bag, the truck auto locked. My keys were locked in the bed with my gym bag.

I was able to get roadside assistance to come help me access the cab, however that's when we found out that the anti-theft system will disable the "unlock" buttons inside the cab and if you manual unlocked the doors, it will lock everything. Therefore I had no access to my bed without my truck keys or my cover's latch keys. I had to uber home and get my spare.

Moral of the story and useful info:
    - I need to keep a copy of my cover's latch keys hidden in my cab somewhere so if this happens again, Roadside assistance can actually help.

    - I always thought that if someone was to break into my cab, they can simply unlock the doors and access my bed. I was thinking about putting in a kill switch for my Pop'n'lock in case I had something valuable in my bed that I had to leave unattended for awhile. Now I know that won't be necessary.

I don't totally get this. Is it really an anti-theft system activation? Because I have found that if my smart key is locked in the bed (tonneau, Pop'n'Lock) it may be out of range to allow me to unlock the cab.

It was the Anti-theft system. The alarm was going the whole time, the "unlock" buttons on the doors weren't working, and if you manual unlocked the "switch" next to the door handles, you would hear all the actuators on all the doors "lock" including the tailgate.

I think the moral of the story is to unlock a door if u already are unlocking the pop n lock(through the drivers door handle) and then open the tailgate. Your already at the door you could just open it. I always do this because the 20 or so second auto lock feature is annoying sometimes.

The truck wouldn’t start with you keys in the bed anyways......

What's the question here? It sounds like it is operating as designed. I think your dealer can disable the auto-relock if it's a nuisance.

Also when unlocking through one of those lockout rod things that your roadside assistance guy had, you just have to quickly pull the handle right as soon as you flip the lock knob before it has a chance to relock again. Done it a few times. The guy that helped you from roadside assistance has no skill.

Side thought, you could also always keep a spare key to your tailgate hidden.

When unlocking your truck and tailgate with the keyfob, opening the tailgate doesn't cancel the trucks auto-lock. If I'm just working with the bed and opening and closing the tailgate I'll open and shut a door first

Maybe you could get another door switch for the tailgate and splice into one of the rear door switches. This would allow the switch to break the auto-lock timer.

If you unlock the truck and do not open one of the doors (does not include tail gate) , the truck will lock itself back up.
Moral of the story is always open a door first after unlock then put stuff in the bed

Wait a sec the truck doesn’t auto lock.......oh the lock after unlock if the door isn’t opened. That was always a very wierd function.

One word of caution if you plan to use the bed (with Tonneau cover) as a “secure” location. If someone suspects you have a pop-n-lock, and is somewhat knowledgeable about the install... realizing the wires run under the pax side, and happens to have a 9v battery in their possession. All it takes is a quick cut and wire strip, and they are in your secured bed without making any window breaking noise or creating attention. Example would be a thief watching a mall parking lot, see someone put items in the secured bed, close the tailgate and lock the bed with a fob... it happens. Oh yeah, if you apply power to the cab side, your doors will open.

While this is true ( I have the homemade DIY popnlock courtesy of TW) I am more worried about the guys who just run by looking for something unlocked. If they are knowledgeable nothing you can do will stop them completely. First Toyota I had was stolen so I put in a kill switch. This was before chip keys as it was an 86. Actually did prevent a theft as a guy ad the ignition stripped out but all it would do was crank as the kill switch disabled the fuel injectors

That seems like a massive vulnerability.......at least for them breaking into your cab. Pop and lock should include a diode on the cab side harness to prevent that from happening.

This seems realistically like something that could affect any of their products...the weather-pack connector is fairly common and I can see a somewhat smart thief just making a harness to plug into the vehicle-side and open the doors up from a small portable 12V battery.

Even better reason to padlock my swingout

Seems like I just posted here somewhere about a door only key under the truck on the frame in a mag box.

    Just sayin'
