Would this work together?? I'm not really sure what I need? So I bought the detroit truetrac and my mechanic said you should buy new bearings and shims. I saw both of these in Amazon so I ordered it.

That's all you need. Might as well re-gear? Will be cheaper if you pulled and dropped the third off only.

I was thinking about it but I'm not sure if it's my budget with the parts and labor. Does 4.88 gears would save me gas mileage?

Not necessary improve mpg but putting it near factory performance if you're running larger tires. I recommend gears if you're considering larger tires. Do it all at once so you don't have to pay for a second setup. If you're 4x4, you must gear the front as well to match.

Like I said, if your capable of pulling the third (8 nuts, brake line, ebrake cable) the shop will charge you way way less.

I believe my 2nd gen tacoma has enough power even with my set up. Just needed more traction 4wheeling.

So now my question is. It says 4.88 on the parts I just ordered is that mean it's for 4.88 gears or it would work with my stock tacoma?

A 8.4 is a 8.4. That do not change. Will fit all year 8.4" from t100 to tacoma. They're all 30s

Oops my bad it doesn't say that. I mistaken the 8.4 to 4.88

If you haven't ordered, something you can consider is looking for a second gen complete rearend with an elocker. It will be a lot cheaper than adding a locker to your existing axle. IDK how much parts like that cost in 808 but where I'm at, a complete 2nd gen with elocker runs about 700. If you don't plan on adding gears etc, that might be the cheaper route and it's a selectable locker vs an auto

    You will need an 8/8.4

Seemed like you just need to order from www.eastcoastgearsupply.com no stress and not have to worry if you're getting the correct parts, especially from failedbay or idontknowazon. Will cost less if you can install yourself.

Unfortunately even that would cost me over 1000$ here in Hawaii. Not much tacoma in junkyard either because everyone loves tacos here and if you do find one it's because it was on a major accident

Even if you spend 1k on it, I still think it's cheaper than add a Detroit.

    Detroit ~$600
    Master bearing kit ~$400
    Labor ~$500 or more

    Elocker axle ~$1000
    Wiring ~$200
Sell your old axle for $300 or more to recoup some loss

But hey, do what you think is right for you. It's just wishful thinking

You're right. My plan was just have some traction going off roading. Were I live not much places to go everywhere is either gated or private property. There's some spot here to go but not like the mainland. I guess what I'm saying is I don't really need to go all out on rebuilding everything and also I'm just a weekend Warriors off roader. But I do waste alot of gas driving in Hawaii we don't have highway mostly stop and go traffic. If 4.88 would save me money on gas no doubt I'll do it. Lol gas here is almost 5$ a gallon ‍♂️
