So I was reading a thread on Tacoma pricing and how much the dealer makes. One post in particular caused me to stop and think. No, I mean really thing of it's ramifications in general. This post says Dealers do nothing but lie. Lies, all of them!
He wished people would just tell the truth at the dealership!
I thought "Hmmm, he better be careful what he wishes for!"
Let's see what would happen if the people at the dealer actually told the unvarnished truth. Here goes...
"So you wanna buy a Tacoma? You realize that is a horrible choice for you living in a city..."
"So you worry about the mpg of a Tacoma? If you lose about 75 lbs of that belly and ass you will get a lot better mpg..."
"So you want a better deal on a Tacoma? Step aside because the guy behind you wants it and is willing to pay."
"So you want a Tacoma to go offroad? It looks like the only offroading you will ever do is if a Cheeto falls under your couch..."

I of course am making light of being truthful but, to be truthful, most people do not want the truth and absolutely cannot handle the brutal truth. They want the truth only a little bit of the time.
I work in a world of truths and fact. It can be brutal, especially when you forget and take it into your personal life.
Point is, be careful what you wish for lol.

Last time I went to the dealer Prince Akeem Joffer was there. I couldn't tell if he was a customer or an employee.

More truth... 99% of the people on TW (myself included) spend money on tires and suspensions and lights they really don't need. So yes, the salesmen lie to us, and we lie to ourselves. It's all part of the dream. We don't need most of what we want.

Exactly... most people want the truth when it suits them.
So many come here and look for validation of their thoughts and when they don't get it they get butthurt. They don't want the truth.
One of my favorites is when people blame the faceless "bean counters" for options going away or a difference in price. What really happens is much more complex. Usually it happens like this:
Customer focus groups want something new like blind spot monitoring or something like that. They also don't want to pay extra. So Toyota does away with less popular options and keeps price in line. A small group of customers then complain bean counters did it.
The biggest truth, and the one that is the hardest for customers to wrap their head around, is that they, meaning customers, are driving the change. Not Toyota, not bean counters, not lawyers, not engineers... customers drive change.

A potential buyer's experience at the dealership is subject to the current status quo, particularly with supply and demand.

My point is, nobody is entitled to any deal on the sales floor. It boggles my mind when people complain when they aren't just given a deal automatically.

Taco's are currently high in demand, and supply is low. The dealers hold all the cards.

I have done one trade-in/purchase on Carvana and one lease buy-out on Vroom. Both were fucking amazing. I look forward to the future if it involves clicking "buy now" on a vehicle I want and skipping all the horseshit. It was glorious.

If I'm buying new now, I just go the Costco route and go in and say "can you get me Costco pricing?" and they generally say "yes" and that's all the negotiating I feel like doing. Not worth the time or energy to try to squeeze out another $300 or whatever.

I actually don't really mind sales people at dealerships. It's the fucking finance people that are annoying acting like you're ruining their day when you say "no" to every little thing they try to push on you.

With this truck though, the finance guy goes "well it's obvious you don't keep vehicles more than 2-3 years so I'll skip the extended warranty part" so that was nice lol.

The finance people use decision fatigue to get you to buy crap you don’t need.

I'm old school and bought 30+ vehicles face to face. It's easy to lie digitally. It's hard to lie face to face. However, times are changing and that's fine too.

When the sales manager tried to push extended warranty on me, I asked him if he believed in the product he was selling. He said yes. I said no thank you then, 36 months will be enough.

That's always funny to me when it comes to Toyota. I've bought three from a couple of dealerships so far and it's always the "these vehicles have over a hundred thousand electrical components blah blah blah" and it's like "wait I thought I was buying a Toyota because I don't have to worry about all that stuff?" and I'm kind of eyerolling in my head.

I've been the victim of buying or getting something I convinced myself I needed when I really didn't (my ex-wife comes to mind...) Seriously though, I think the problem is most people are just trying to keep-up with their friends/neighbors/co-workers/family/etc. I don't get that. I bought a new Taco last Spring because it checked several boxes of what I need a vehicle for. I could have bought a more expensive Pro or Limited model or even gone full-size with a Tundra, but I'm a pretty firm believer in buying what I need and what I can easily afford. For me I just needed a reliable, four-wheel drive which my GF and I could use for road trips around the southwest which often require driving down washed-out dirt roads to get to old Mine sites or Ghost Towns. My previous 4wd was 22 years old, had 210K miles on it, was not comfortable for long trips and was becoming unreliable and (worse) hard to get parts for. I no longer trusted it to take me into the woods or out of state so it was time for it to go.

As far as lying Salespeople go, I think that's to be expected with just about anything. However often times the lying when buying a car goes both ways. A co-worker of mine is a former car salesman and he's told me stories of how some customers would lie and tell him they were ready to buy that day, or that they had cash, or that they had perfect credit, that their trade was in perfect shape when it wasn't or that it was paid-off when it wasn't or that they had a job when in-fact they'd been laid-off sometimes in the not-so-recent past. Having to deal with that on a daily-basis I could see how someone could easily become jaded. It's definitely not a job I'd want to do.
