Retrax on my gen2 is pretty good on water prevention. No issues after a car wash and occassional minor drips near the tailgate during a monsoon. If you want great water protection, consider a one piece fiberglass lid.

My cover has been truly waterproof. Meanwhile, after seeing all of the crap with the factory cover and then reviewing some of the aftermarket versions.... I think I will be getting the Backflip2

Few drips by the tailgate aren't an issue. If I can stash a suitcase or two at the end of the bed near the cab and have it be ok, that's all I'm looking for.

You guys are having a pretty exceptional weather event. Like we did last March-May. 36 freaking inches. Good test though. Stay safe.

    This.

I had a roll n lock on my Sierra I absolutely loved it, but it wasn't perfect. The vinyl fades and I ripped a small hole in it. And it takes up valuable room in an already small bed. It did well sealing and keeping out water for the most part but it want perfect. I never kept things back there that could be damaged by water, that's silly! And that's why I have the cab. I like our factory cover so far. Is it incredible? Nope. Effective? Yes. And I didn't have to fool with buying one, waiting on it and installing it. I can get in the truck and go! Side note: I haven't had a need for it yet but we did do some garage selling already.

I had a Bak-Flip on my F150. LOVED it. I will definitely put one on the Taco if I get one. Completely waterproof with the exception of what little water would creep in the tailgate cracks. If you have a Bedrug, like I did, all the water stays in the back near the tailgate. I've traveled through rain with pillows, blankets, computers, etc. in the bed and they are completed dry upon arriving at my destination.
Additionally, I can open the Bak-Flip all the way up against the cab to haul riding mower, bikes, etc. Don't ever have to take it off.

Go with Aftermarket.. I have a factory one on my new 16 and only a couple of the seals actually seal down to the bedrail. I have fiddled with it and there is really no adjustment to make it tighter either. If the seals actually touched it would actually work much better.

I put little rubber pads on the top, so when it rested on the cab it didn't hurt the paint whatsoever.

Edit: Now that I looked at the link you posted, that is almost identical to the Bak-Flip. Looks like it may take up a little more of the bed, however when in the up position. Looks like a great cover.

That undercover flex appears to be a much better solution than the OEM cover. The design would reduce the chance of water getting in. That's important to me as we would have luggage back there sometimes. Thanks for the link!

Question, do you need a folding/retractable/roll up cover? Just saying I've haven't come across one that was advertized as weather/water proof. But the one piece in ABS or fiberglass are generally well weather stripped and I've never had an issue with mine letting water in. Seems to be a question of priority - what's needed more: the versatility of a folder or the weather tight feature offered with a one piece.

The one-piece covers look nice, but I assume would be a PITA to take off and put back on.

Factory accessories are usually built by an aftermarket company who has agreed to have toyota badges and stickers on them.

Take for instance the TRD cold air intakes....made by AFE Power......and the TRD CatBack Exhausts....made by Borla...

I simply do not understand why people seem to think you "lose" bed space with a trifold tonneau. Get a fucking step ladder if you're too short. While those of us that are 6'+ can still reach the front of the bed when the tonneau is folded to the cab.

There is no loss of space. If you can't reach it with the trifold folded, then you likely couldn't reach it without the cover there in the first place.

Plus, they usually only take 2-3minutes to remove if you need the whole bed anyway.

went to auto show on Thurs. and was not impressed with the cover. It weighs a lot more than 40 lbs. It must weight close to 75 lbs, as I tried to lift it on one where it was not bolted on. Not my favorite. One comment on most of the new models of the Tacomas. EVERYONE has black interior. On the Tacoma.com site, they only show BLACK interiors for every model, the dealer told me that is all they can get, I called Toyota and they said that was all for now, and also the e-mail said the same thing. They are pushing hard the off road models and I do not want off road. At the auto show, every one that had money in their pocket to buy one right then, was bitchin about it. The only ones who were really excited about the TRDs seemed to be very young or a few who really spent time off road. I have acerage, but not interested in going over rocks mountains etc. I just want one like my 2005 Pre Runner that has over 200,000 miles and is a pleasure to drive on the highway. I might pass on this one, I am not thrilled with what I have seen so far. Too much black, too much stiffer drive and moon roofs, Not what I want.

Per reports, factory tonneau doesn't fold to the cab...and prevents use of a front rail. Pretty much defines loss of space if you ask me. Definite fail.
