trying to determine if going from a 2010 with low miles to a 2016 or newer is really worth it?

hi folks, question here regarding purchasing 2016 or newer.. i presently own a cherry 2010 TRD Sport 4 door with only 60k miles.. my question is: is it worth it? are the differences that great to justify?
also, was price shopping and noticed that 2015's go for big money, often times more then the 2016's up... is there a reason why the 2015's demand such a premium price?? so, anyway, curious to know your thoughts.. thanks! john williams, New Mexico

Powertrain in the 2nd Gen is more desirable in many cases than 3rds. However, after owning both, they each have their merits. Personally, you can add the tech via head units with carplay, something the 2016 still won't have unless you add it too.

    Just pimp the 2010 out.

The 3rd gen is made for softer men. I'd stick with your 2nd gen. The only reason a forward camera and terrain camera was added is to keep boomers from high centering and bumping into cars in the Costco parking lot.

In before the second genners brigade the thread, but...

When I bought my truck in dec. of '16, I looked at second gens and they were within spitting distance of a new truck with a full warranty, so for me the choice was easy. However, if your truck is in good shape, has minimal rust, and most importantly is paid off, I say keep it.

Test drive the new model and see if you like it, some do, some don't.

If you are in a position to trade then I would. So much changed between 2010 and 2016+. Life is too short to second guess yourself. If you doesn’t impact you financially, I’d say do it.
As for why 2015s still demand a higher premium, that’s still a mystery to me. When I bought my new 2019, they had used 2018s on the lot priced higher than new. Craziness. When I asked them why, they couldn’t really explain it. Good luck in your choice. Have a good evening.

Used prices vary greatly with model and mileage, it can be hard to get an apples to apples comparison. All things being equal, the newer model will be more expensive. Truth be told, all used Taco's are expensive for what they are and what they offer.

When I bought my truck, they also had a 14 or 15 OR I test drove with 30K miles for only 2K less than a new truck. Bonkers.

Yeah good point. I’m sure it wasn’t apples to apples comparison but I just noticed the used was priced higher and that’s where I left it. Didn’t give it much thought after that since I bought the new one.

Stick with what you got IMHO. I love my new truck but then I went from driving a twenty year old truck to this thing so it's like a space ship.

I bought a 09 trd OR bran new and I just last summer bought a 2019 trd OR bran new. I think the 09 overall was a better truck. The 09 was an auto the 19 is a 6sp so I can’t say on the trans issues people talk about in the 3rd gen but I think my 09 just felt like a more solid and rugged truck. The 19 is light years fancier for sure.. heated leather, nav, all the fancy stuff but idk I miss the 09 and the 4.0 fwiw

Of course you buy the newer one if you can. It's called progress.

I have a DCSB 6MT 4x4 TRD Sport. Great truck and I’d buy it again today. That being said if I could have found a clean low miles 2cd gen in the same configuration that wasn’t priced as a new one I would’ve bought one. I like the 4.0 motor and looks of the 2cd gen trucks a little better. I’d say keep what you have and maybe upgrade some things if you want.

I just bought a 2020. I'm not too impressed. I'd keep your rig, and just be happy with it.

I'd say keep your current truck but if you're still having the itch then make sure you have an extended test drive in the Gen3 to see if you're happy with the performance. Back in 2016, I was able to secure a new TRD Sport,DC, V6 Auto for a 3 hour tour. I definitely found the engine to be weak on the bottom and transmission to be very confused as to what gear it should be in. I test drove the 2013 Limited 5spd Auto and bought it. I use my Tacoma for my work truck and tow a lot with near max loads and was apprehensive about Gen3 having the Balls to do work. On the flip side I liked the interior of the Gen3 and when you get it going it is really fast.

Go test drive a new one and see if it's worth it to you.

When I was in the market, I went and test drove the 2018's. For the money, they didn't blow up my skirt, so I started looking for a newer second gen to replace my 1st gen.
