So you put Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and black labs together in the same crates? Those must be really big crates. Maybe your girlfriend could buy an old school bus or more appropriately for expensive dogs a custom tour bus.

Now I’m wondering if they make a crash-rated crate for his girlfriend to keep his balls in.

excellent, one more piece of the puzzle! you just need smaller crates!

my dog is 110lbs and 42" stem to stern. that's the only reason i got a double cab. i took out the rear seats day one. there's tons of room back there without the seats. traditionally, dog crates for transport are only large enough for the dogs to fit in there, they aren't studio apartments. and at every dog show/event i've ever been to, crates are in the back of the vehicle.

you have so many options available to you. give up the crates, get smaller crates, put crates under a cap in the back....

    Hunting dog?

Camper shell then put the dog in the bed sans crate where they belong.

Hell I think @JKO1998 breeds em and they cruise around in a gimp cage looking thing.

Certainly you meant to say '20" tall at the withers', right? I mean after all, these are very expensive dogs!

Seems the only option is to build the platform to raise the crates up. And then get one of those review mirrors that displays a camera. Use that in place of the lost view from the crates.

Well OP is gonna get shit on s'more cuz he's kind of asking for it from the forum.

Anyhow some people have removed the rear seat at the 60 or the 40 and mounted a kennel there. I've considered this for my dogs as well. I am still considering removing the 60 side and doing a top/bottom setup but not sure if I want to do that quite yet.

Yeah I think that's right. There are only a couple decent crate making companies and only their smallest crates fit in the Taco (when two are back-to-back). I am still curious as to whether I could just remove the armrest. Looking at how it's molded I don't think I can but I'll probably pop it off and take a look to make sure.

The crates might be marketed and bought to protect the dog, but is there any scientific evidence that they actually protect the dog? What exactly does “crash tested” mean?

OP don't care. I've got 4 teenage boys of my own so I'm used to dealing with this shit. Steady blocking people who sound like my teenagers will help my user experience over time.

Removing the seat completely doesn't make the interior wider, unfortunately. So it won't help me. I need to either make a custom door panel on my own or figure out a way to remove the armrest.

Crash tested means the crate has shown in tests that it will hold the dog inside of the crate if the truck crashes. Doesn't mean the dog doesn't get a scratch but it dramatically reduces the likelihood of a dead dog. Sort of like crash testing for people- just using the crate instead of a seat belt. And yes, these are scientific tests using crash test dummy dogs. You put a lot of years into training a hunting dog. We are lucky that we can afford to protect them so it seems crazy not to do it.
