The last or second to last page of the TSB says to apply an “approved modification sticker”, there is nothing about the ECU update in the paperwork. I’m getting the feeling they didn’t even bother and BSed me just to send me out the door.

They never do the sticker. Just check with a code scanner, most will show the calibration ID.

does a code scanner like the one they’d use at an autozone check it? I don’t have one of those Bluetooth things.

It might. My cheap one that's over 10 years old does, but it's in a sub menu.

Service rep told me when I asked about getting the fuel pump done at the same time. He said they are doing it in phases because there's just too many cars to get done all at once.

I didn't get a sticker, but they definitely did program the ECU.

When I updated I cleared everything so it would relearn. About 20 miles of those it was a little rough but settled right in. I have not done a true mpg test yet but I think I am getting 1 less mpg . Like I have said before I think they tuned these truck to get the best mpg sacrificing drivability. WTF if I was buying for MPG I would have bought the Hybrid Corolla. Have about 1000 miles on new tsb now. This is a great starting point for a tune now. Once Matt releases the new ids I would like to try the mild to wild or someone else’s tune!

Unfortunately, my dealer refused to perform the TSB due to the VIN falling outside the range. My vehicle was built in late October. Its clearly locking/unlocking the converter in high gear between 45-60 mph under light load.

It's like Toyota never misses the mark with the VIN range, right?

I'm speaking with ToyotaCare at this moment.

Late October (of this year?) means that you probably have 04B81.

You would know better than I, for sure. When I get caught up, I'll load up TechStream and report back.

I'm amazed how manufacturers program automatic transmissions. Everything is about the EPA and emissions.

    Nah. I'm not amazed.

Got my fuel pump and this TSB done today. I didn’t have any major issue how it drive before, but it is a noticeable improvement in terms of smoother shifting and hold gears “more appropriately” for lack of a better term. I notice a little bit of improved throttle response, but using etc is still significantly more throttle response. I only drove about 5 mi and stopped to fuel up on the way home since I took it in under 1/4 tank. Happy I did it. I’ll keep an eye on any gas mileage changes.

I put about 50 miles on since having the TSB tune applied. I have not noticed much change in fuel economy yet. I think that this may be because I was already on the lower end of the fuel economy side (for stock) with a 6' bed and heavy cap. It seems like it runs a little richer on cold mornings like today on my commute. Normally the real time fuel efficiency meter is a little higher when cruising at 40 mph. 16 mpg on my 6 mi commute which is average. Drove about 40 miles yesterday and average closer to 19 (mixed) which is actually a bit higher than normal for similar trip). Shifting is smoother and seems to have better logic and holds gears longer. It doesn't jump right to OD, it will actually drive in 4th at 1500 rpms (as it should) in stead of immediately upshifting then downshifting again with the slightest increase in throttle. For anyone that has a $hitty dealer print and bring the TSB in. I took mine in for the fuel pump recall and brought the TSB, the counter dude said they would "look into it". I told them do not do anything (including the recall) if the TSB isn't going to be applied, I will take it somewhere else.

I have about 1,500 miles on this TSB. Killer, very peppy. Fun to drive!

I'm new to all this, it looks like my truck has an update available via this TSB. 8966304B8000 to 8966304B8100?

I had the truck in for it's free 15k checkup on Saturday and mentioned this TSB to the service advisor. He had never heard of it but was very receptive to having the tech look it up and install the update. What a huge difference it makes. I have always liked the truck and was never one to complain about the shifting issues, but wow, this is like a whole new truck now. I went on a 150 mile drive Sunday to check it out and was blown away at how much better it is. On my commute this morning, which has very slight inclines, but still enough to make it shift in the past, it held its gear the whole time. I gained 1 mpg on the short trip because it wasn't constantly trying to get into 4th. If you qualify for this TSB it is an absolute must do.
