Subjective Observation from a gear head:

It actually makes me sad that my 2021 v6 Tacoma has the identical irritating transmission behavior as my 1997 did.

    Kaizen

So it shows that it is only for 2019 and 2020, I wonder if it could be done to a 2018 and if it would be better or cause problems?

Wondering the same thing, especially since the transmission is the same.

It’s covered under your warranty 96 months or 80k miles. Might be a good idea to print out this tsb and take it with you to the dealer service dept. Then tell them your truck is having the issues stated in this tsb. May be a good idea not to mention this forum to the service writer as they may get their panties in a wad over forum mentions..... Some dealers will do this tsb no problem. Some will give you the run around saying they can’t reproduce your “shifting” or “hesitation” issues and refuse to apply this tsb. If they refuse, you do have the option of calling Toyota Corporate and complaining. Corporate can convince the dealer to update your ecu per the tsb.
I’m going this Thursday to try and get my 2019 updated. Hope they do it.

You can purchase a tactrix obdi cable and download tech stream and do this yourself as well. It’ll set you back $170ish per this thread by @tonered.....https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/ecu-tsb-update.562550/

Here is the tsb link for the 2019’s-2020’s...

THANKS! Yeah I'm over the mileage (82K as of this morning) I Have a close friend that owns a decent size (5-6 bays) tire/mechanic business - I wonder if this is something he can do?

If they have Techstream and an appropriate interface from the truck to the computer with Techstream installed, then absolutely.

Another option would be to find someone local to you to do the update.

I was on the last 2.0 that has been released. I tried premium at first for over 500 miles. It did give it more pep but just did not shift right. I tried all the tire sizes in the premium tune. Then I went to the 87 and tried all the different tire sizes to see if any would help with the shifting or holding a gear longer. All were ran for over 500 miles. I seriously gave them all a chance. I was even messaging back and forth with another member. He was doing the same as me and we were comparing thoughts. He noticed the same as me. I wanted to make sure it wasn’t just my conclusion of what was going on.
The TSB mentions in the notes I think 3 things that the customer might be experiencing. Lack of power, hesitation of shifting, and not sure the third. That’s what my truck was doing. Just felt like it had no power unless I pushed pedal almost to floor. Felt like they detuned the engine to the extreme for fuel mileage benefit. The shifting was horrible here in the mountains. Just to much to say on that part. I was seriously looking at other trucks when the crazy caravana pricing was going on. Now with this new TSB I am very happy with my truck now. I have no plans on ditching it now. Once Matt releases the 04B33 tune packs. I might try the mild to wild everyone is talking about. But as of right now I am good!

Thanks! I need to do my oil tomorow (hitting 83K this afternoon), so I'll aske the dealer and see. You'd think considering I use them every 5K miles for maintenance (which for me is about every 4-5 weeks) they will do it.

Take a look at the warranty listed in the TSB, you may have exceeded it.

4-5 weeks?! Where are you taking your taco?! Lol

Even if he did exceed the warranty, the cost of the TSB is about 0.5 hours of a mechanics time since there aren't any parts.

Thanks - Yeah I've exceed it - 80K miles is the warranty and I've got 82500K as of right now...hoping they will do it anyway or do it for a nominal fee.

I drive a lot - we own a horse farm - I'm 60 miles from my main office - so a 120 mile daily commute - and I work 7 days a week most weeks. Even though we own 4 vehicles I enjoy the Tacoma and just take it most of the time everywhere I go...and from where we live, everywhere I go is a long way - Ha! Ha!
