What do you hear/notice though? Engine RPM change, etc?

Engine RPM drops slightly but there is no gear change.

When the engine is cold, the TC doesn't lock, so the change in RPM/exhaust note only happens at gear changes. After things have warmed up, there is a big change in RPM at gear changes and a small change at torque converter lock. It was pretty noticeable before the TSB recalibration when driving up slight uphills, or after making a 90 degree turn and easing on the gas.

I thought that change in rpm was based on switching the timing in the engine for more power vs eco based the atkinson cycle stuff? Maybe it is the torque converter then.

I think they did a really good job for sure. I would say if Toyota had this tune back in 2016 this entire issue would not exist.I think this will trickle down eventually to the earlier years at some point . Hopefully

I got my update today at the dealership. They were great about it gave me no problems at all..
Have to say i did notice a difference of the transmission staying longer in 3-5 gears as its shift points seem to be higher then before. Just made the throttle feel more responsive.
Does seem to have more valve chatter with the hood up at idol then I remember...

I went to my dealer yesterday for my 10k service and asked about the update, and if they could do it. He asked me what the symptoms we're and I told him the usual about gear hunting and throttle response and so on...He said "Ok, no problem, i'll have them check it out" I even had everything all printed out but he told me to keep, it and gave me absolutely no hassle at all about it.

Once I got in and drove off, I noticed the difference immediately and wow, the truck just wanted to go, feels great so far...Thanks for everyone's input on this update because I had no clue about it before. I even got the little sticker under the hood along with the paperwork showing that it was done

I hope so too :fingerscrossed: I don't understand why some dealers give people such a hard time about doing this, good luck man.

I brought my 2020 double-cab LB TRD Sport in for the free 10K service. I complained about the lack of power (chuggy/luggy) around 1500 RPMs at 70 MPH with a slight incline. They reflashed the ECU per TSB 0092-20. Will post an update on our next long trip to see if there was any major MPG changes. Might be hard to discern since we're into winter-mode gas blend now.

Here's the TSB if anyone would like to view.

Well, I just got done with a trip to Idaho & back which was about 2k miles on the update. I think the tranny had relearned my driving habits before I went on the trip as I had about 500 miles on it before I left. I definitely noticed on hills the tranny holds the gears longer, and will hold it for longer once the hill finally ends before shifting up to 5/6. No noticeable change in fuel mileage on the hwy, was getting 21-23 mpg per tank with stock tire size E load. Happy customer here

No kidding? That’s a few mpg better than I get with factory tires. I thought my slightly lower fuel economy (compared to others) was because long bed and bed cap. I have got as much as 26mpg though on interstate trips drafting behind fast moving semi trucks ;)

Yeah in town I noticed about a 1mpg drop but that might be to the CA winter blend fuel. I enjoy the drive ability more than the mpg lol. Interesting point about the drafting thing...might try that next on I-5 when I’m bored

I’ve been hesitant because I have no complaints and don’t want to take a fuel econ hit. Finally plugged my OBDII reader in tonight. Apparently I have no complaints because mine was delivered with the latest calibration.... 04/20 build date.

Guess that ends any mental deliberation I may have been having.

Well, I had my buddy do the update today. I put about 40 miles on my truck and I’ll say it definitely drives better. I think this thread pretty much covers everything so I really don’t have much to add. I will say if you have the older calibration then just get it done, it’s that good!

Went in for 5k service on my 19
Told them I was having some delays with throttle response and gear hunting at highway speeds especially on incline.
Said toyota cust serv told me about a tsb that may help and showed them the pdf provided here.
They serviced the truck and they did the update to the ecu
As many others have said, definitely a noticeable difference.
No hesitation or delay when hitting the gas. Excellent throttle response. Feels to even be shifting much smoother.
At the end of a 30 mile drive home, I was able to really see the difference when I got in the left lane to pass a slow driver. Zero delay and the truck just wanted to GO. I was surprised by how different the truck responded.
    Very impressed so far

I know I just posted last night but man, after driving to work with little traffic this morning I could tell it’s actually really freaking nice. I live on the coast so I drive up and over a 1,808 foot mountain pass every day for work. The one thing that’s just WAY better is not only the passing on the highway but the truck will really hold gears longer on inclines. Before, you’d be going up hill and if all you did was barely breathe off the throttle to adjust your speed the truck would up shift and just bog, then you’d have to really bury your foot to get the stupid thing to down shift again. It was SO annoying! I didn’t pay attention to what gear it was in this morning but the truck held 2,500 rpms or so for most of my drive up hill and I could let the corners shave off speed and then cruise back up to 60-65. It barely ever shifted and it was spot on. No more hunting and bogging. I’ll post back in a week with my MPG and let folks know. I’ve calculated my trucks computer many times and it’s spot on for MPG. So far it’s showing about 1 mpg better. So that’s kind of cool.

It’s hard to believe how horrible the old software was and Toyota was ok selling it like that. Then again it’s still got drum brakes too. lol
