Went to dealer Friday to get TCI-5380 (Canadian market). I explained the occasional lack of power but mostly the constant shift change on highway and showed them a video. They didn’t find the bulletin (???) so I showed them the copy I brought… really thought they wouldn’t do it but they did! Happy with the update so far, less random shift change on highway. Really glad this information was shared here, the issue was really annoying.

So I liked the update when I got it…it was good for like a month then one day, I swear it was when I got gas, it just felt like the truck started to suck again. So a bunch of things ran through my mind. Maybe it was bad fuel, maybe I needed the fuel pump recall done, maybe the update wasn’t so great after all because my transmission re learned my habits…

Fast forward to my recent tank of fuel, my MPG went from 18.5 to 20 again and it drives great. Suddenly I remembered, winter and summer blend…so I googled when it’s normally switched and that’s around this time. Any thoughts or anyone experienced similar differences?

Maybe I’m just crazy. Who knows.

Just a note that fuel batches are constantly adjusted to maintain a constant vapor pressure. So, you can judge blends by the average temps in your area.

I don't think your crazy. A bad batch of fuel is likely.

The early signs of fuel pump failure is hesitation at high engine loads. More power than normal running.

I was thinking maybe it was the blend because it just didn’t seem to run as good during the winter. Who knows…

Consistency between Tacos is just not there, but I don't notice a performance difference in the winter, just lower MPGs. I think for me that is all longer cold start enrichment though.

Yikes. That beats our record cost by a lot:

18.5 to 20mpg how?? I've never even got above 15 mpg, either I drive like hell on wheels (I do) or something is seriously wrong with my truck

easy on the throttle, anticipate traffic actions (dumbasses), take care of the truck mechanically (tire psi, air filter, proper lubrication) and plan your trips efficiently.

by doing that I was able to do 25 mpg and a range of 411 miles on that tank. (effing stressful thou)

The late production 2020s came with it from the factory.

The OBD Fusion and Carista apps and some handheld OBD scanners will show the ECU ID. TechStream will also.

My commute is 35 miles each direction. I start at sea level (I literally live right next to beach) and drive over a 1,808 foot gnarly climb into the Silicon Valley, it’s like 120 feet above sea level where I work. Anyway, it’s about 5-6 miles of city driving then the rest is highway (with California stop and go depending on time of day). I drive it with ECT mode always on because it really helps in the mountains and frankly it’s just less sluggish in traffic also. When I had factory tires I would get 22 average if I really babied it, now with my 265/75 16s it dropped to 18.5-20. I will admit factory the mpg might have been a hair optimistic because with my +1 tires the speedo is actually perfectly accurate now. Also, the truck does drive better with 91 and I personally notice a slight up tick in mpg too. I recently noticed my truck drives a little better again so I think it’s liking the summer blend fuel over the winter. Fully loaded I get about 19 on road trips but it’ll definitely go down to 17 if I’m trying to go 75+ the entire time. I also floor it occasionally and still manage to get at least 18. I will say if I fill up my truck on the side of the hill with the harder grades to climb then my average economy will be like 15-16 for 50-60 miles. But usually it’ll pop back up to the 18.5-20 range after a free down hill parts too.

To sum it up, yes my commute is a little wild with extremes going up and back down the mountain every day but it always averages that 18.5-20 range for mpg and yes I’ve calculated my mpg the old fashion way to make sure my computer is accurate.

    A few.
Multiplying ur tripometer by 1.04 will give u the mileage u would have with the stock tires.
Im in a similar situation. After mounting 265/75/16s and having the tsb done I am 1 mpg lower than stock.

I just had my fuel pump replaced and the TSB-0092-20 done today and it drives great! So much better shifting…

I’d recommend anyone have the update done, if they haven’t already

Took my Tacoma in today for the 15K service, requested TSB-0092-20 be flashed. I was very surprised and happy the technician I spoke with knew all about the service bulletin. Had no trouble getting it flashed and there seemed to be a noticeable difference on the way home even though I was in traffic most of the way.

I'm wondering about this TSB. It seems like people are happy with it.

I have a 2017 Tacoma, but my VIN sequence is listed in the TSB, even though the TSB calls out 2019-2020 models specifically as the applicable vehicles.

Anyway I have a service appt coming up and I'd like to have this done if I can get them to do it. I love my truck but the shifting and gear choices it makes, coupled with generally laziness under part throttle make the drive underwhelming to say the least. I've adjusted to it but itcould be a lot better imo.

Follow up to the ECU flash. First couple short drives around town, didn't really notice anything earth shattering with this, however... last night drove into the city and home, about 35 miles each way and on the way home I really noticed the change. Not sure if the tranny just needs a little relearn time after the flash or maybe I just wasn't as distracted with crazy drivers since it was almost midnight. Runs like a different truck. Especially noticed in Cruise Control .. no more dropping down gears to find power. It really did well. Hope other's experiences are as good with this.

TSB-0092-20 does not apply to the 2017s. Earlier TSBs do and there is a new ECU ID (04B05) shipping with new ECUs from the parts dept, but no TSB for that yet. I'd hold off a bit longer.

Although, if you are a 2.7l, there has been no TSBs at all, which is BS given the AT issues.

If they did not reset the learned values, it can take longer for the Engine and AT to adapt.

Could have been that, not sure if clearing stored values is part of the process.. would have to read the TSB to verify. I'm kind of leaning in this direction since there was definately a noticable differernce after 100 miles or so of driving.
