So I bought my 2020 TRD OffRoad in April of 2020. There is supposedly an ECU update for the transmission that would help the transmission shift points. This update (TSB-0092-20) was released in September - months after my vehicle was built and purchased. I took my truck into the dealer for it's 10k service today and asked that they apply the TSB. The technicians scanned the truck and said there are no available TSB's and the ECU is on the current available. The Vin of the truck matches what trucks may need the TSB. So my question is: do the dealer techs know what the hell they're talking about? The service advisor stated that maybe an update was pushed out remotely via satellite comms.... I don't buy that lol.

Use an OBD scan tool, they can read the calibration code. Auto parts store will check in the parking lot for free although they likely are not too familiar with that specific scan tool function. And no, they cannot update remotely.

I realize there are alot of posts in that thread that he referenced. but if you read through it, it explains how you can check for yourself whether you have the update on your truck or not. The Creader I purchased for my truck off Amazon was like 40 bucks. Thats how I was able to check to make sure the dealership did the update, also for me to be able to diagnose any codes that my truck throws if I have any issues makes it well worth the investment to purchase....

Are you trying to solve a problem or do you just want the update?

The keyword in the introduction of that TSB is "some" 2019-2020 models may.

I'm guessing the 2020 had an early cut off vs. the 2019. I think 2020 production started in 9/2019 so there's quite a few months before it was possible your truck was produced.

Mainly trying to make sure I have the best driveability possible. The truck shifts funny from time to time, but it may well be on the current version. My current scanners aren't able to pull ECU versions, so I just ordered another.

Thanks for the info! Just ordered the Creader since it was on sale. My Bluetooth OBD2 and cheap $20 scanner weren't able to pull the ECU Cal info.

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
What's your trucks' build date? Mine was 02/2020 and came with the latest calibration. So yeah, tech was probably telling the truth unless yours sat on the lot for months. I got mine on 4/30/20 during Crazy COVID 0% days.

Most 2020's fall in the vin range but I've rarely been able to update them. You're fine.

Mine was built 2/2020 and purchased 4/26/20. Thanks for the reassurance!

i was in the same boat, I ask to see the firmware directly from the scan tool and sure enough it had the new firmware. My guess is that the early 2020s had the new firmware as "test mules" but toyota made that update available to all others later in the year

A word of advice. Don't waste your time on trying to update, let your local KDMax tuner check if you have the update or not, and then have them install the KDMax tune. I have the Light Tip throttle 91/93 octane tune and have put 1,000 miles on it. It solves a lot of the drivability issues of this truck.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-kdmax-performance-tune-by-paparee-and-twtaco.713699/

Post 1 of that thread has a list of tuners by city. Message one of them.

Experience what driving a taco should be. KDMax.

Eh I'm not too fond of tunes while inside a warranty, but I'll consider it after the 60mo/5yr is over. The driveability definitely isn't bad, for me it was a matter of ensuring I have the best driveability Toyota has to offer from their own ECU updates. Thanks for the info though!

Yup, once I started reading others have the update prior to the TSB, that's exactly what I thought. Makes sense to pilot it out for 6 months or so before making it available to the rest.

You'd like have to get a 2020 5hat was built in 2019. (I bought my 2020 taco in November of 19) They performed the TSB and I noticed some improvements.

However, the TSB can't fix all of the wierd shifting, hanging on gears, searching for years.

I called burien Toyota (15025 1st Ave S, Burien, WA 98148) to make an appt to have the ecu update. I was told I need to bring the truck in to diagnose it before they can confirm eligibility. Price to be negotiated after time of service.
my truck shifts like shittt, constantly hunting up and down. Upshifting super early, keeping rpm’s around 1500 max.

“This repair is covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 96 months or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle’s in-service date.”

I’ve been driving in extra power mode most of the time
Also plan on having 3rd brake light gasket issue fixed while in there.

It sounds like you are in WA. You don't have to pay for it, just come see me.

The update should be significant, but it is not a cure-all. The AT will still act like an AT is supposed to, just a bit more normal.

If you do want to pay them, note that most folks who posted WOs show 0.4hrs of time. Just so they don't overcharge you. In reality, the actual flash is a 10min process.
