Anyone have the TSB number for the pinging 4.0? My truck is cackling at low rpm. Not sure the plugs were ever replaced and at 120k I'll try that first. Going to have my buddy's Toyota service writer son see if he can do the TSB still.

anything else I should be looking at to get her running better?

I had the same problem with my '13 4.0L. TSB took care of it.

Thanks! That's good to hear. I'll see if I can have it done.

    More than I can afford
    Interesting.

Both of mine ping under load at low RPM. Both have around 120k on them. Plugs have been replaced (several times).
Running premium makes it not do it at all.

Have y’all tried a PEA type fuel system cleaner. Although I have a 15 and use 87 top tier fuel there’s no ping under light loads. Fuel system cleaner every 5K.

Is this a change in engine timing or trans mapping?

That TSB is engine tuning. It should help.

That stated, a bit of ping/knock is to be expected (and is OK) with the way the adaptive timing on these trucks works, get the TSB done but dont expect it to get rid of it completely.

I would wager its backing off on spark/timing. Under hot conditions to cause a ping it's detonating pre-mature. I don't see how the trans would come into play. Out of morbid curiosity I wonder if slightly over gapping the plugs would yield the same result, I'm not advising that by any means though.

I had the TSB done on my 12' and it helped but on hot days it still pings on hot days. Mostly when accelerating in 1st gear. Like others said, premium gas makes it go away. I may start using premium in the hot summer months

Anyone here have bin dumps of the pre and post TSB files? I can't personally do it myself, but know where to go and how easy enough just to tweak it a bit. More or less just make a tune file aimed at the parameters that were changed for the TSB. Well it's just ecufiles.com or use someone on mhh. I haven't tried to dump a tacoma ecu but i feel a cheap $25 MPPS cable would work for the dumps and flash.

Err... I do actually have all the files somewhere. I keep accidentally downloading repacked dumps of my own code. I know I have a mess load of Toyota calibration files somewhere, that was back when I was on tundraworld and wrote a keygen for some version of techstream I've long forgot.

I got it done and it runs pretty good. I can feel how it cleaned up off-idle acceleration. Not bad. Still a slight ping under certain conditions but I'd say an improvement for sure. They

somehow wiped my thumb drive that I had in the USB port with music on it.
