My '05 is in the shop under the frame recall. It's been in the shop for 1 month and am being told it will be another 1 or 2 months, at least, before I get it back, due to the backlog.

I truly appreciate Tacoma replacing the frame, AND their willingness to cover a truck rental so I can continue landscaping. (although I really miss my Taco!)

Question is: When will the TSB for the leaf springs be made into a recall? I'd hate to have to take the truck back in if they can fix the leaf springs while they have it in for the new frame. Dealer is saying they can't do the fix with out recall authorization.

specifically, which TSB are you referring to anyway ?

TSB's don't get made into recalls except in rare circumstances. recalls are huge and the NTSB is involved and it involves huge work tracking where these vehicles are and who currently owns them...super duper expensive.

if your VIN doesn't show recalls on the toyota recall site, no recall.

if your VIN.make/model/year/plant/symptom doesn't show up in a TSB, no TSB

Thanks for both replies. I was reacting to what the service manager said when I broght my truck in for a "program offer" for rust inhibitor if needed. Upon inspection they found holes in the frame and thus fell under the frame recall. The service manager then quipped that a leaf spring recall will be coming out and my vin qualifies for that! HMMMMM, maybe I misunderstood him. Holding my truck for 2-3 months will be enough time "away from home!"

    Thanks again

According to the documentation I've seen, initial notices are supposed to be mailed out in two days. I can't verify whether Toyota is able to stick to their timeline, but it sounds like people might start receiving information in early Dec. Hopefully a fix and second letter follows soon after.

Hmmm, when my boss's 06 got a new frame a few months ago, Toyota put on brand new 4-pack leaf springs at no cost to him. Dealer said it was one of the things that was done when the frame was swapped out. They did want to sell him new shocks, though, which he would have had to pay for.

I did just hear something similar to js312 comment on a neighbor who had a similar situation with his '06. Sounds like something might be coming down the pike in the next couple weeks, dealer had commented that my vin was on the tsb list, so we'll see how it all shakes out.

    Thanks again for the comments

    Op,

You are definitely getting new leafs in the frame swap. I doubt they will be the old 3 leaf packs either. So probably stock new 4 leaf packs.

One thing I noticed about the tsb 4 leaf pack I had installed in 2010 ln my old truck, they made the truck sit higher than the new 4 leaf pack from factory in my new 2015. I would say they are a different spring rate from the old tsb packs.
