    HEAR ME OUT:

I think people are saying there is a TSB NOT ONLY for shifting issues (yes, this one is old news), but also a TSB for checking automatic transmission fluid. Given that this is page number three of this thread and no one can actually confirm this or provide a TSB #, I will assume this is another Tacoma World false alarm, much like the supposed new gearing for 2017 models. :D

2016 Tacoma Limited bought in Dec 2015. I posted one of the first complaints about the shifting problems with the six speed transmission in February. I got the first "fix" in June after many, many emails and phone conversations with Toyota. The firmware update fixed about 70% of the problems with the transmission but there are still shifting problems on hills and pulling loads. The transmission-engine combination is schizoid i.e. the engine and transmission perform more like a passenger car than a truck drivetrain. My son, who is a tech for Hyundai/Kia says the shift schedule is incorrect but I suspect that it is a more severe issue. All of the manufacturer's trying to accommodate ridiculous CAFE standards set by California and the Feds have simply created the ultimate "meets the specifications but is defective" drivetrain. Since I have $41K invested in this "midsize truck" I'm going to rely on Toyota engineering to come up with some sort of solution.

Not too much to add other than the following.

My 2017 went in for its 5,000 mile checkup. Dealer performed "TC1601 - Reprogram ECM (PCM) Engine" - as for notes it states "Completed Software Update For Shift Enhancement"

It does shift much smoother and faster when going from Reverse to Drive after backing out of the driveway, and seems to shift a little smoother while driving.

The Service person stated about the transmission fluid level that it was a '16 and early '17 model issue, but mine was produced in late August, and that issue was addressed prior to mine being built, so is not part of that same transmission fluid known issue.

Did you experience clunking when coming to a stop? If so, did this update fix it?

I didn't have any 'clunking' when shifting, but I did have a seemingly long transition from Reverse to Drive, and this update fixed it. I also seem to have a slightly modified (in my opinion better) shift pattern, which is helpful.
