This is exactly what mine is doing, and the dealer told me it is not a plug issue because there are no codes.... Just had them do a 30,000 mile service and they told me I had iridium plugs, but no I don't so I am changing them this weekend and will get this TSB done very soon....

I live in North Florida and have noticed occasional engine knock on my 2014 Tacoma 4.0 with 1300 miles. The problem I am having is this problem is more evident with temperatures in the 90s and it's cooler now. I made an appointment for next week at my dealer to check this out however, if the tech does not hear it, I will get the answer operates as designed and the problem won't be fixed. I also did call Toyota Customer Care and they advised me this flash actually updates the trucks built prior to July 2014 with the new engine and transmission specifications and should be done. From my research it appears this TSB-0044-14 has got a good success rate for solving most engine knock issues. It appears however the dealer will play their tech confirmation game and this fix could be delayed until next summer when I can prove my case. I guess I can check with other dealers but those are the rules.

A lot of people had that TSB done. Check your fuel mileage, after you have it done it won't ping but your gas mileage goes to crap...

Where is the mileage data coming from? I have been monitoring the TW feedback on the engine knock TSB and most of the replies from members who had the flash had no change in mileage with a 77% success rate solving their engine knock issues. I'm trying to watch the results from others since I guess I may have to wait for warmer temps!

I have the issue only occasionally since switching to mid grade fuel. I'm just worried that it won't ping when it's at the dealer and they won't perform the TSB. I Guess I'll switch back to regular before calling a dealer. Just wanted to find which dealers will actually perform this TSB without giving you a hard time. Most dealers down here are a pain in the ass.

Where in south Florida are you?

I have a friend who is my toyota service advisor. He doesn't play the "I don't hear it" game.

There appears to remain inconsistent dealers on addressing this TSB-0044-14. Yes, the TSB does indicate complaint needs to be confirmed by Tech however, I spoke to Toyota Customer Care about this and was told this flash program that addresses engine knock and transmission shift points is actually being applied to late 2014 and all 2015 Tacoma 4.0 engines at the factory but told the dealer makes the final answer and in my case the service writer wants to do it but service manager says tech must confirm problem first. Since this TSB appears mostly successful, it makes sense to do it if the owner wants it. I've already noticed a decrease in engine knock since outside temp are dropping. I really hate playing 'games dealers play' I think a customers accurate description of the complaint and the observing the shift points can easily be identified at any time to determine if flash is needed whether they hear engine knock at the time or not. I did check another Toyota dealer and was told to bring my vehicle in and they will perform the TSB no matter what. I just hate to drive to another dealer several more miles away when my selling dealer should handle this. I may address this with the General Manager or Owner because I have a good memory when it becomes time to where to buy my next vehicle!

I'm in the Miami area. That's what I'm worried about. Some dealers turning me away for not hearing the knocking.

Just print the TSB and tell the service manager this is what you want done. Tell them that if they refuse, you will contact Toyota corporate and file a complaint against the dealership for refusing to perform warranty work for known issues.

The tech told me today that it is a problem with all 2012+ and that the only reason it wasn't a recall is because there arent cases where it causes actual damage to the engine...that's why it is covered under a different warranty...it has to do with the impact the emission changes had on the engine.

Went to my dealer today and was provided the TSB-0044-14 for pinging as well as my first oil change. My truck was not pinging however, I was advised Toyota agreed to provide the flash without hearing a ping. I noticed my truck was running better however, it may be a while before I can completely rule out engine knock due to the cooler temperatures. I am encouraged so far.

Finally went to a dealer and explained what was going on. Service guy knew about the TSB before I told him about it and got it done. So far no knock yet.
