I’d be more worried that the anemic motor and its lack of balls will get me killed before a sensitive adaptive cruise control system does.

Foreman at the shop said that 2016 and 2017 are more sought after by off roaders because that tech crap will conflict with lifts and such. Wonder if this at all would effect value. Even though theirs more tech, it may have been unwanted.

Isn't the only difference the TSS - which can easily just be turned off?

IDK I don't own one with the TSS. Just going by what the foreman said.

I’m guessing no. Those dudes represent (maybe) 5% of the Tacoma consumer base, if that. I think what this boils down to is people being afraid of technology.

The system can be turned off, however there is a light on the gage cluster that indicates the system is not on, annoying. Mine has been replaced under warranty once already and is acting up again. The light that indicates the system is off will come on for what I feel is for no reason. If you try to use the cruise it will flash, “clean sensor “, which is already clean. So I have been using the non adaptive cruise control. Truck has 11000.00 miles, not happy. It will be going back to dealer again.

I should add-- when the truck "hit the brakes", It didn't do so until the car in front of me was almost entirely in the right turning lane already. There was absolutely no "real" reason the TSS should have tried to stop me. But it did, and it could easily have ended badly.

If someone is tailgating you, this could turn into trouble real quick. That's one thing I've learned so far.

I don't think it's a "fear of technology" as much as it is a trust issue. That's the case for me, anyway. TSS very nearly got me rear ended by someone going 60mph. So now, I don't trust it.

Sounds like it was doing it’s job. Just because your driving habits don’t include slowing down when someone in front of you slows down doesn’t mean the truck can pick up on that. If you were defensive driving, you would have slowed down and you would have never that that occur.

What if that car decided not to make the turn and swerve back in your lane and you were going too fast?

Edit: The logic behind these isn’t complicated. First it detects an object. It determines how fast it is going and the distance away. It then determines your speed and following distance. Once it figures out that, it uses a formula to determine at what following distance and speed does it need to interfere to prevent a collision. If I felt risky, I’d post a screenshot of data I receive from my company’s similar technology. Basically I get a read out of every seconds data including those variables. It is impossible to account for your risk of that car turning. It’s about the same as you pulling out in front of someone with a turn signal on.

That doesnt mean TSS almost killed you, it means that semi-truck did because they were almost following you to closely.

Every vehicle should be able to slam on their brakes at a moments notice without being rear-ended

Thats a driver issue not a TSS issue

I'm willing to bet the number of complaints on TSS is significantly lower than the 2018 owners that haven't had a single issue. I've used all of the features of my TSS so far (Except my truck has not applied the brakes for me besides Adaptive cruise), and not a single issue. I lifted my truck before it had 1k miles, and did not require any re calibration. Yeah I get it, "Ive been driving for 250 years and I am way safer than this stupid technology". We've all known how to drive without this technology, the technology is just an extra perk. If you cry about TSS, you might as well cry about ABS, Traction control and all of the other upgrades that have come in vehicles the past 20 years. TSS isn't perfect, but it is clearly successful if its almost on the entire Toyota line up, and most other manufacturers have a similar program.

Too much automation is actually dangerous. Those of us that are pilots experience this with every new model aircraft that is produced. Computers simply cannot make normal human quick-judgement calls and although the safety factor of the automation usually does what it is suppose to do, it cannot accommodate for something that the design engineers didn't think of when they were designing the product.

My brother has a 2018 Tacoma with the TSS and he picked me up from the airport recently and as we were approaching an interchange that has 2 way traffic and a 270 degree curve to the right, the truck felt the need to brake quite harshly every time another vehicle crossed the forward visual plane of the truck. He also mentioned that the truck has braked several times as buzzards took off from the road in front of him.

"too much automation is dangerous " I thought it was a good thing until my wife doesn't want to drive our brand new truck lol.
