Hey guys, getting a new Taco after my last one went down the river. I found a good looking gray TSS at the dealer today at lunch that I liked. I was planning on sticking with a TRD Off-Road package that I had last time. However after taking the TSS out for a spin, I liked having the extra 1" on the stock rims (I'm cheap and don't upgrade the rims), and I don't know that I ever realized how rough the ride was on the Off-Road package with that suspension.

Anyone else have any thoughts or experience deciding between the two? Or anyone owned both have some feedback?

    I'd appreciate your 2-cents guys.

The TSS is a dealer made package from my understanding. So Although you get the neat wheels, you pretty much lose out on the rest of the aesthetics. PLUS you lose out on the TRD stuff, if you're going OR then you lose the locker and maybe LSD all together, seats, suspension and whatever other option your dealer didnt install. I had an option for a TSS with 1000 miles and ended up with a TRDOR with 10k instead for all the added stuff.

    Hope this helps some!

The TSS is a gussied up SR5... The TRD package is worth it.

TRD and see what you can negotiate with the dealership about getting the wheels from the TSS package swapped onto the OR.

Yeah this is pretty much what I'm thinking. The TSS is just dealer installed, I could probably get new rims for cheaper that just the TSS and not have to worry about the badging which I don't particularly care for any way. I'm not a big OR guy, this is mainly my DD but I have been out with it before on beach dunes and stuff like that were the OR package probably helped more than I realized.

If you're not too big on the OR then maybe check out the trd SPORT, those have a ton of aesthtics thatll look much nicer than the TSS and still very capable offroad if necessary

Thought about that. The only real problem I have with the Sport Package is the hood scoop, not a huge fan of it really.

I always vote SR5 if you aren't into going to do heavy off road. You get a cheaper truck price, and can upgrade to better than factory items down the road if you want them.

Spoke with the dealer last night, said they'd have to order a gray TRD OR for me, looking about 4 weeks out. Anyone have any experience negotiating the price down if its ordered from the factory? I feel like if I go this route I'd have less bargaining power with them, not much opportunity to say "the other guy down the road said he could do it for ...." Little disappointed at waiting 4 weeks too, was going to hit the beach for the 4th weekend and would have been awesome to have to the new ride; plus I have to drive a damn rental until I get it. They also said they couldn't trade out the TSS wheels when it gets here. That seems like a BS answer, if its all dealer installed they just be able to pull a set of the shelf and mount them up.

You have more negotiating power with something that's on the lot than with a special order. You say you are cheap and therefore don't upgrade rims... If you buy the TSS you are way over paying for all the add ons. I feel that the OR package additions are even over priced. If you aren't going to make changes yourself, then just buy the package which has the features and bling you want. If you're truely cheap then you can't afford to be lazy. You'll save a bunch of money buying a base model or SR5 and adding the aftermarket parts you really want - make it yours, not something they think you want. Stock parts are easy to sell on here or CL.

    nothing cool
Go to cars.com and look up Tacoma TRD off-road in you area. You're from Texas? If you're willing to drive a little you can find you exact truck today. Or even better. Find it and tell your dealer to have it shipped to your dealership.

for anything 'dealer-added' like TSS or XSP-X, I would rather have my Toyota come direct from the factory and not
have it go through a second phase where untrained and unskilled non-factory workers have a go at
taking it apart and installing 'crap'.

    just my 2cents

OFF ROAD TRD: Rear Locking Differential, and on 4WDs also A-TRAC, these are useful traction systems to get you further into the back country safely. Essentially a traction package that enhances the truck's abilities. Bilstein shocks and off road tuned suspension.

SPORT TRD: Fake hood scoop, colored bumper and mirrors, no different traction systems than a base Tacoma (except 2005-2008 which had a limited slip differential). Essentially a looks package that enhances the driver's ego. Some like the seats and Bilstein suspension feel of the Sport.
