I just traded up from my 2011 Taco to a 2018 Taco. Mine came with Toyota Safety Sense features like adaptive cruise and lane departure warnings.
Does any know if Toyota plans on doing any kind of updates, either OTA or in the dealership to add features/functions to the TSS-P? The truck should have all the necessary hardware to have more automation, like actual lane assist, autonomous throttle at slower speeds (traffic jam conditions), etc. and it would be great if we got updates in a similar way to how Tesla has rolled them out on the model S.

I don't think so. There are other vehicles in the lineup that do have some extra features. All electric-assist steering racks have lane assist, all hydraulic-assist racks do not. Our trucks are hydraulic as is the Tundra's, and they do not have lane assist. Autonomous throttle at low speeds would be great and some of the cars have it, but not the Taco. Not sure if this is a hardware difference or some other reason for it only existing on some Toyota models.

I'm pretty sure it's as good today as its going to be for you. Body on frame vehicles haven't received lane assist from Toyota as far as I know.

    From the Toyota site:

    https://www.toyota.com/safety-sense/details/

"Under certain circumstances, Lane Departure Alert (LDA) 18 is designed to detect lane departure on roads with clear markings. LDA only activates when you’re traveling at a speed of 32 mph or faster. When you hear and see the alert, after carefully checking the road around you, you should safely direct your vehicle back to the center of your lane. In addition, Toyota vehicles equipped with Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) 25 and Electronic Power Steering (EPS) include Steering Assist 22 functionality. When it’s activated and senses that you’re unintentionally drifting, the system may automatically make small corrective steering inputs to help keep your vehicle in its lane."

"Intended for highways and similar to “constant speed” cruise control, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) 21 lets you drive at a preset speed. DRCC uses vehicle-to-vehicle distance control, which adjusts your speed, to help you maintain a preset distance from vehicles ahead of you that are driving at a slower speed. DRCC uses a front-grille-mounted radar and an in-vehicle camera to detect vehicles and their distance. If a driver is traveling slower than you, or within your preset range, DRCC will automatically slow your vehicle down without deactivating cruise control. If DRCC determines you need to slow down more, an audio and visual alert notifies you and brakes are applied. When there’s no longer a vehicle driving slower than your set speed in front of you, DRCC will then accelerate and regular cruise control will resume. Select Toyota vehicles feature Full-Speed Range DRCC, 20 which is designed to operate between 0-110 mph. This enables low-speed following, matching speed and, under certain circumstances, stopping before colliding with preceding vehicles on highways."

Theres no way your going to get Tesla features on the tacoma. Plus the less they put in the less things break.

Tesla uses an series of camera’s for a lot of their features, Toyota doesn’t even come close with the hardware or software. I wouldn’t hold your breath on updates.
