It's not a m1 but I got to use a match grade M14 for three years when I was in the Corp . One of my favorite do all rifles. You can reach out and touch some one at 1k yards or take the arm clean off if you hit them close enough .

That sounds like a really good idea for a meet/greet location.

That's exactly what I love about that rifle. Iron sights get the job done at 10 yards or 300. Put glass on it and it becomes your best friend at any range.

Yeah that would be nice for sure. Or a whole lot of promiscuous adult shenanigans.

I shot in a iron sights 1k yard match at black canyon when I was 23. Didn't do to bad for my first time top 10 . The target looked like a stamp behind the front sight . The 6 foot black circle on the target was a pin dot. Frame hold all day long .

That's crazy. But it sounds like a good time. I might like to try that some time, but I can't imagine how long it'd take to get iron sights sighted in at that distance.

We had a dope book . Every shot and a descripion of all the conditions during the shot where in that book . Before you took the first shot of the day you could go back into the book and have a well educated guess on how to set up windage and elevation for the current conditions. Shooting up hill down hill , wind direction 6,3,8,12 o clock wind speed (treetops ,flags, mirage,) do you give the wind a full,3/4,1/2or 1/4 value . It's a process but in the end the bullseye is worth the work. Man I haven't had to think about this stuff in 25 years . Iam glad it's still there.

I just read an article written by a former marine who was taught how to sight in his rifle by Carlos Hathcock when he was still in. It was the exact process you just described. One cold bore shot per day, record the result and keep going until you have data at multiple ranges for every imaginable condition. That's alot of work but I'm sure it's well worth it at the end of the data collecting process. I wonder if Hathcock had a had in doing the shooting for the M14 dope book.

He did. Gysgt Hathcock is totally responsible for the Marine Corp sniper program and for the significant improvement in marksman ship in the Marine Corps back in the 60's. Marine sniper is a good read (story of Carlos Hathcock).

They are long. Can't remember but I would say it had to be 20 or 22. What I do remember was the weight. Just shy of 14 pounds.
