My 2016 Tacoma Off-road TRD AC had more payload than my Tundra does. True story.

I installed Katzkin leather and it looked and held up great. Lots of threads in here on the Katzkin.

Sounds like the Tacoma is the truck for you. Some here will say test drive it and then test drive it again and then go for another test drive but does it really matter? The Tacoma is a great truck that you will absolutely love for the uses you've described. If you end up with the A/T be sure to get the KD Max Tune from your local area tuner. Its night and day performance. Its literally like turning on a light switch. Ethier way good luck with your purchase OP these are tough car buying times but you will definitely get a premium for your Tundy.

If you get a M/T a KDmax tune will work; a Coyoza tune is M/T specific.

The big negative with a Tacoma V6 is the Atkinson Cycle tuning. My understanding is it uses valve timing to extend the burn cycle resulting in a more efficient burn, but the unintended consequence is lower power(torque) at low rpm. Aftermarket ecu tuning addresses the Atkinson Cycle deficiencies resulting in more low end power and no loss of fuel economy.

I've gone back and forth, started with a pickup, then 1st gen Tacoma, then a Tundra. For me, the Tundra was just too damn big so I went back to Tacomas.

For offroading and getting around town, the occasional hauling of various stuff, the Tacoma is the better choice IMHO.

If you regularly tow something moderately heavy, you may want to consider sticking with a Tundra. I've towed lighter loads occasionally, and the Tacoma does fine (things like dirt bikes, personal watercraft, lawnmowers). It will do heavier loads, but it's not fun -- again, in my opinion. Plenty of people here will say it tows fine.

Had a 2016 which was problematic, but reasonable enough to drive. Felt like a bit of a dog on 33s and upshifts on steep grades weren't very efficient. I ended up keeping on the gear selector "S" mode and all of the problems went away.

Fast forward to my 2021 and it drives like a dream in drive as well as S mode. For times when I need to keep at a high rpm without a downshift I'll turn on ECT mode and it's fine. Uphill can still be a little slow in the 2021 but it doesn't hunt like the 2016 does. The thing with our trucks is you really gotta floor it to get good torque (hits peak torque at 4000+ rpm) to get up a steep grade with momentum. Again keeping it in S you won't have these problems at all, or throw 'er into ECT mode. Doesn't feel like a dog with 33s this time around though, actually feels pretty peppy.

Comfortable seats too, even on long trips however I think I'm the odd one out there.

I find the seats super comfortable as well. Drove to Prince George from Surrey and had absolutely zero complaints. I’m 5’11” 200#.

When I drove to Banff and back in my ranger, the next day when I got home, I could barely get out of bed. Never ever had that happen before in my life.

Sounds about right for a Ranger. I have a 1999 and I want to find some Exploder bucket seats to put into it, bonus points if they're heated leather.

Tacoma is easier to off road than the Tundra but still not that great... You need to spend alot of money modifying. If you're serious about off roading get a Jeep.

If he offroads a Tundra, I'm sure he'll be plenty happy with a Tacoma.

A lot of people tend to keep it close to stock or go for a fairly inexpensive Bilstein 5100 or OME set up and still wheel them hard. Hell, people do when they're stock. You don't need to throw a bunch of cash at these things to make them a good off road vehicle. IFS might have drawbacks, but you don't need a solid axle and 37s to have fun - broken parts and bumper caps go with the territory no matter what or where you off road.

Given the very "stock" appearing Tundra and his first post detailing what he's looking at for a Tacoma, he's probably not going to go crazy on regear, expensive suspension, massive tires, big break conversion etc and just wheel it with some 33s lol.
Only he knows for sure, but TacomaWorld doesn't always = :spending:

You're totally right! I'm really struggling with deciding how much of a build I need to do the trails I want next summer. Wish there was a consultation service with some1 experienced...

I thought the same thing about the standard interior so I went with the sport premium. Love my truck. A0BFF3A2-B12B-41F3-A5A5-C7C6ACFCA8B4.jpg

Question for you guys. Whats the difference between sr and trd offroad? Is it just the locker and crawl control? Thinking maybe a sr and adding all the crap I want may be the way to go, lockers , ome lift, wheels / tires , armor, topper
