Please forgive the ignorance but all the searches in have run come up with this as a 1st gen upgrade. Four Wheel and Off Road July 16 issue page 72 article cites compatibility with 2nd gen. Just added 17" MT Sidebiter wheels and 285x70x17 Nitro Tera Grapplers G2. Looking for a bit more stopping power as I have ever noticed stock a bit weak. Again forgive me....I am a Fj40 guy who got tired of no AC here in the Sonoran Desert

I believe the larger 4Runner brakes from 03-09 are bolt on and larger. They will require 17" wheels though.

4th gen 4 runners had two brake sizes, tacomas got the larger of the two sizes stock.

Really? My 16" TRD wheels on my Tacoma won't clear the brakes on the 4th gen 4runners with the larger brakes (sports and limiteds).

I saw on EXPO portal recently Scott from Addicted Offroad just upgraded the brakes on his 1st gen Tundra with the larger 4runner brakes (calipers/rotors) (including the swap to a 17" wheel).

Did some digging...the rotors are definitely larger on the optional 4runner brake package (sports and limiteds) 337.6mm vs 318.5mm. The Tacoma uses the 318.5mm rotor (as far as I can tell). The calipers use the same pads regardless but the 4runners with the larger brake rotors use a Caliper with longer mounting ears.

This means that technically you could go all the way back to a 1st gen Tacoma or 3rd gen 4runner with those parts and go even bigger than the Tundra brakes.

Here's a good write up on swapping the 4runner parts:

hmm i could of sworn that the bigger rotors were already in use on the tacos.

Well them maybe you can do 4th gen 4 runner rotors n calipers on a taco for bigger than the 16in rim

    a couple of things
Nope. Like justinh posted the 4th gen 4runners received bigger brakes on the Sport and some of the limited packages. A 16" wheel will not fit on those vehicles. I know this as I sold my 2006 4runner sport a few weeks back to get a Tacoma and it had the larger brakes and a 16" wheel did not fit.

The big thing now on the 4th gen 4runners is to swap to 5th gen calipers and rotors. They use the same pads but the rotor and pistons are slightly larger I believe. Some also feel that the 5th gen calipers are less likely to freeze up which is a common problem with the 4th gen 4runners. I actually had all the parts for this swap still in the box when I found the exact Tacoma I've been wanting for a while and decided to trade my 4runner in on it. I wanted to try to test fit the new calipers and rotors on my new Tacoma, but ran out of time to get it done before I had to send the parts back in order to get a full refund.

    interesting.

Well either way, personally never had any braking issues on my taco but i have the electric boosted master cylinder which has 2x the line pressure of the vacuum brakes so that helps out.

If the 4th gen / 5th gen stuff would bolt up with a 17+ in rim, i wonder why more have not done it.
